Re: How You got it ??

i have my current truck because of my wonderful wife. See i had an 86 but i sold that before we got hitched up because i really didnt need it. I wanted another one and i looked on here and found a local cheap truck. I went to go look at it at Sues insistance, and she sorta fell in love with it the second she saw it and ordered me to buy it
its been mine almost 3 years

Re: How You got it ??

I wanted a square body chevy. I would have settled for any 73-87 without lots of rust. More so, I REALLY wanted the Silverado package, 1987 w/ TBI v8, black on black, swb, 2wd, 700r4, "unmolested" one owner truck.

Found that EXACT truck 5 minutes from my house. That was little over 3years ago. Due to rust, it is currently apart as I restore it to the best of my ability.

Re: How You got it ??

It was Christmastime of 1977. I had just completed restoring a 1956 Ford F-100 big window pickup and a 1959 El Camino. I sold them both on the same day and found myself without a pickup, which is a sacrilege for a fireman. With a pocket full of $$$, I was off to the Chevy dealer in Pasadena, CA to find a new ride. The dealer had two long bed Custom Deluxe C-10's and a loaded 454 Cheyenne C-10 shortbed. The shortbed came home with me. That was Christmas Eve and 32 years later, we're still plying the streets of L.A.

Re: How You got it ??

Yo!
OMG what a story!
Started with trying to decide what to do with a '73 3/4 ton flatbed manure truck. Rather than finding a cab for it, I found a whole truck, in FAR better shape.
A friend of mine told me he was planning to buy a truck for $250 for the rebuilt 350V8 that was under the hood. I could have the rest of the truck for free if I helped to transfer the 350V8 to his '79 Berlinetta.
Turned out to be a '78 3/4 ton P/U that was in a pasture full of cattle 20 miles north of here. They chewed most of the paint off of the bed,...crushed a q-panel,...never mind the bullet hole:

Salvaged the '78! It was in FAR better shape than the flatbed.
Used the Warn hub Dana 44 front axle, and 5560 lb rated full floating rear axle from the '73 flatbed, had the '78's TH400 rebuilt (added a new 1200 stall speed converter), installed a machined, twin-stick ORD NP205 for independant axle control, and built a 350 hp/400 ft lb torque 350V8 for it. Twin 20 gallon tanks feed it. My wife named it FRANKENTRUCK long ago and the name has stuck. It moves well with it's 4.11:1 rear gears and looks good due to it's 17" Foose Spank wheels and 33" Firestones!

FRANKENTRUCK's 22W RMSx4 iPod Kenwood powers four 6" three way Kenwood speakers installed in the cab corners.
I got $100/ton for the leftovers of the '73 and junk parts at the local junkyard. Ended up with a fantastic truck!
Todd.

Re: How You got it ??

Dad bought mine when I was 11 or 12. I drove it alot around our local shooting range as he ran the shotgun fields. He gave it to me 2 months before my 15th birthday, drove it alot more with him before I got my lisence. He passed in '99 and I bought it from my mother for $1. I almost traded it once and tried selling it twice (all before he died), really glad I didnt now. I never realized all the life lessons I learned in/with that truck from my dad. It is in sad shape now, but hopefully one day........

85 Gmc High Seirra, 305, 4 speed. My uncle bought it new from the dealer, drove it until 1995 when he just decided to quit driving it. My uncle and i were drinking beer one night when he said to just come get it, he just wants it out of his yard.

Borrowed a truck and trailer, 300 in fuel, 18 hours on the road and it was mine.

Its running good, road ready just waiting on registration.

Re: How You got it ??

1. Dad bought the 81 3/4 stripper new. It came in on the lot, Dad new it was his but the dealer refused to release it for a week, half a dozen farmers tried to buy it then ordered one like it. Mom gave it to me after 60K miles and 3 engines. Truck probably has less than 15,000 road miles, and most of that was loaded.
2. Bought the 87 C65 at a local aution for $400. Drove it home, then got diverted on another project so there she sits.
3. Bought the 87 diesel off Ebay and had it shipped to MI. Then diesel went thru the roof... it's now my back up truck.
4. Bought the 82 rolling chassis off CL, about 30 miles away, nuice body for $500. Hauled it home in the pouring rain, quality time with my youngest daughter.
5. Bought the 84 frame off CL, whole day to go get it but got to drive the beautiful back roads of MI.
6. Bought the cab for the 82 chassis at a local auction form a military buff, I believe it's an 85
And there there are the 7 motors and 5 trannys and my other 2 trucks....

Re: How You got it ??

well it all started when my buddy decided he wanted my 90 Sport. I bet he bugged me for 6 months about getting rid of that truck but I insisted that I would not get rid of it unless I got a 4x4. Well one day he called me up and said he got a rollin chassis from a 2500 with the tranny and transfer case still on it and if I would trade him the sport for his 82 Silverado I could have the chassis to go along with the truck. I kicked the idea around in my head for a couple of days and called him back with the reply (throw in $300 and it's a deal) and the adventure began.

I came home with a bone stock 2wd 1/2 ton with a 305 and a rolling chassis now 3 years, 3 motors, 2 tranny + transfer cases and 3 front axles later here she is powered by a 454, Th400, NP203, and a Dana 60 up front.

Re: How You got it ??

In 1986 I was a GM company vehicle driver; they took away my company vehicle so I ordered my truck to drive.

After owning it for four years I got promoted again, which scored me a GM company vehicle to drive once again, so I sold my truck to my father - in -law.

Fast forward 18 years (to 2008), my f-i-l passed away, so I got my truck back.

All of the gory details are posted here:

Re: How You got it ??

I was at the dealership purchasing a new 1998 Monte Carlo, I had been looking for a truck for a while, asked the salesman I was dealing with if he knew of any. He told me that he remembered one sitting in front of the dealership just the other day some old farmer traded in on a new truck. We climbed in his demo and drove over the the used car lot and there she was in all her glory, I took her for a test ride, she was rough, needed brakes bad, and carb rebuild, but for $1500 drive out she was mine, the Monte is long gone (someone ran a red light and took off the front end total loss) but the truck is still with me after 12 years.

Re: How You got it ??

well growing up i had no intrest in a square body chevy all i wanted was a muscle car! well i bought one bout 4 years ago and started to restore it well about 1.5 years ago my car was gonna be done so i could start driving it when i got my license... but that didnt work out well yall know how it is no0 money= longer restoration. so when it came time to get my license i needed somthing to drive well in 1977 my dad bought a hawaiian blue chevy big ten 350/granny gear 4 speed/ 3.73s and it had the beefer brakes and suspention. one thing i have to say about this truck it is tough, between the 35+ years dad has had it and the 1.5 years ive had it its only broke down on us about 3 or 4 times total, and the engine has NEVER been torn down past the valve covers. but eny ways i ended up with the big ten and i love it. the last thing i got to say about this truck i dont care how much gas it burns ide rather have somthing that burns alot of gas and is reliable than somthing that gives trouble all the time and gets decent milage.

Re: How You got it ??

Bought mine from my Dad in 86, it was his farm truck. He could get by without it and I was walking (that's a whole nuther story) 3 engines later ( again there's a story) and starting my 2nd restoration I still have it. Funny thing is this truck has been around longer than any of my wive's. I wonder if it has something to do with me.....

Re: How You got it ??

My dad bought it off a car-lot in 89 (the truck being an 84, which it was in fairly new condition).. with 70k on the original 305. He put something like 400k on it, and it still ran good since my Dad is like Mr. Drive 55, no need to wear it out (he swears he used to can get 18-20 mpg out of it, I have YET to prove this, me being the lead-foot that I am)... but it was time.. so he dumped a 350 in it... and had it painted once like 10 years ago with the stock color.. (Desert Tan Metallic, or Saddle-Tan.. one of those if memory serves...) I even drove this truck while in High School back in the early 90's. Life goes on, I move on... and my dumb self grabs a D.U.I., and lose my license until I complete classes, pay fines..., blah blah etc... if anybody's been there.. you know the humiliation of it all.... anywho... struggling to get all this behind me, (which took some time)... I finally came through.. and needing a ride at the time I got my license squared away.. My loving Father sat me down and said "Here you go Son... giving me the keys to his truck... "It's yours.... with a new 350, to boot"... His gift to me for getting it all together..... seeing me struggle, and what I had to go through for my license... not a bad story huh... lol.... oh yeah, been sober ever since.

Re: How You got it ??

I actually found mine in the classifieds of this forum. I had been wanting a SWB to use around the house, and have a little project. I went and looked at it, and the following weekend, Dave towed it over here for me. I played with it here at work to get it roadworthy for the most part, and have been tinkering on it ever since. I do like my little truck, even if it's red.

Re: How You got it ??

I found mine in autotrader. The guy was moving up north and his company would not pay to move the truck. It had a fresh motor and fresh paint. When I drove it home my wife met me in the driveway, she told me it was the prettiest truck she had ever seen. I looked for almost a year before I found the perfect truck.

At the time I was going through litigations over a wreck I had been in. My lawyer loaned me the money, so I could buy the truck. This truck was my first fullsize, first V-8, and first automatic. Previously I drove a lowered 87 S-10.

This pic is pretty much how I brought it home, except the suspension was totally stock.

The other pic is how I paid for it.

Re: How You got it ??

I was watching this burb for sale for about 3 months, he wanted 1500.00 for it, came by one morning on my way to work and some kids had broke out all the windows on the passenger side and slit the tires... I stopped by to tell him I had a parts truck for my 4x4 burb so dont buy "new" windows, I was going to give them to him just to help him out...he said he was not going to fix it he was going to just get what he could out of it... here was my chance. I offerd him 500.00 and he called me the next day and told me to come get it.

and now

Re: How You got it ??

As a kid i always dreamed of owning a old GM square body. I looked for years, but as other canadian users can tell you there are alot of rusted out ones up here.
It starts out like this... When i first got my licence, i found a mint '94 Topaz for 480 bux, the guy couldn't get it to pass E-test. Being an ispired gears head. I took it, 2 ball joints and filters and it passes with flying colours. Almost a year later, someone rear ended me. 6000 dollar frame damage. As the appraisel said. Insuranse gave me 2000.
With that i bought a 1990 GMC S-15, 2.8 5speed at 1200. Loved the little truck. Drove that for 2 years, all along the while it rotted out. Near the end i had a wooden box on it while i prepped the southern box i got. But never got around to putting it on.
In the years i owned the s15 i was searching around for a square. The best i found was an old plow truck(on my student budget). Being the gear head i was i had signed up for an apprenticeship. Just before i got layed off a couple of years ago...
A guy droped off a 1987 GMC Wrangler for a saftey and to sell it on our small lot. Thing was dirty, let me tell you. I talked to my dad to lend me the money. After a couple of days of begging, he surrendered. She was mine.
The story the guy i bought it off goes like this " I bought it off an old farmer, He had it from new, drove it for about 10 tears till they took away his license. stored if for a few years past that. His kids put him in a home, sold his truck. And auctioned off his farm. The guy was mad cause they sold his truck, the farm didn't matter at that point." The guy who bought it from drove it for a couple of years and then ended up storing it for 5 years untill i bought it." Cleaned it up, added duals and a sport bumper, everything else it original. Now it will never leave me Build thread :http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=404834
