Engine Hesitates and Dies

Bought a 68 C10 LWB with a 396. It ran a little rough when I got it and tried to tune the carb (old q-jet) and found that it had a large vacuum leak. The truck did run and drive ok though. I replaced the q-jet with a 1406 Edlebrock and got it tuned in good. Now when I drive it hesitates and dies when I accelerate. It does better if I punch the gas. When it is parked it idles great and I can hit the gas then (in park) and no problem. Any ideas?

Re: Engine Hesitates and Dies

More info. When I adjusted the idle mixture I got the vacuum gauge to change (rpm change) when I went lean, but never got a change when I went rich. Gauge showed good vacuum all the way out. It also has an electric fuel pump. I is reading about 7 psi. Edlebrock states no more than 6. Not sure if that would cause the hesitation and death.

Re: Engine Hesitates and Dies

Not sure the cost of the pump. It was on the truck when I bought it. The gas is fresh. I actually ran it out of gas a few weeks ago while I was working on it. So I know the stuff in it now is good.

Re: Engine Hesitates and Dies

Does it have the points style distributor?
Does the vacuum advance work?
Have you checked the fuel filter?
How old are the plug/coil wires?
There are a lot of things that can cause the issue you relate.Give us a few more details and maybe we can better guide you.

It sure does buddy, the points are under the distributor cap. The cap is what the spark plug wires plug into behind the air cleaner.

Re: Engine Hesitates and Dies

It is a point style distributor and the vacuum advance works. The plugs and coil are fairly new. I have not changed either of the fuel filters.
