What is a manual throttle used for??

Okay, looked at a 71 C-10 4X4 this afternoon and it had an optional Manual Throttle knob on the dash. I understand the meaning of it, but what was it used for? Any ideas?

You can set your idle.Like when you have a pto you want to bring the idle up is one reason. It`s a good question.

PTO is really the only thing I know of, for having it. Though I guess you could use it to bump up the idle speed when jump-starting Furd?

Yeah that what I use mine for on my wrecker . Bump the throttle up, so the winch works faster.

1. Used to use it as a warm up idle, 2. Cruise down a flat highway. I know its wrong but it worked.

frequently when workin in a hay field they'll set the throttle a little over idle with the truck in gear, and let it idle down the field while the driver would actually get out and work with a helper.
Auto pilot if you will

yup. throttle up a bit in granny gear and point the rig straight down a hay row. we could toss bales on the back till the end of the row, get the truck turned around and start down the next. use it for winching and running an air compressor if its peak output is off idle. -steve

it also works great for plowing when you have the old hydraulic plows. it will get the idle up so the plow will lift faster. also it helps warm the truck up quicker in the winter.

Re: What is a manual throttle used for??

I know alot of the guys that rock crawl with their jeeps in Moab use a hand throttle. They use it for one less function to have to control going up some of the obstacles. I don't have one on my jeep, but I didn't go crawling to the extent that alot of them did.

Re: What is a manual throttle used for??

What LHM said.My uncle useed one for years on a cattle ranch in SD.The old ranch Jeep had one and he would plow a circular furrow around the fields. Then early in the AM at feeding time he would pull the front tire into the furrow and set the manual throttle.then he stepped out onto the running board and into the bed to pour out bags of feed.
He also used it to warm the truck up and as a helper for the plow. That is one Jeep I know of that got worked every day of it's life.

Re: What is a manual throttle used for??

I know Ive done that just to play, but wasn`t going to tell. When working an electric over hydraulic snow plow it`s good to bump the idle to help with charging.
Also in farming, you can syncrho with machinery.
