Towing Options: moving from MD to NM

Hey guys,

I just got orders to Albuquerque, NM. I presently live on Andrews AFB, MD and I only have 3 weeks to decide how I am going to get my 72 from here to there. I have a 2004 TrailBlazer with 5300lbs towing capacity and factory hitch (reese style). I was thinking of several ideas: (1) tow dolly, (2) tow bar, (3) car hauler trailer, or (4) drive it 13 hours to Florida and leave it with my brother for 3 years and not touch it. I need your thoughts guys. Ideally, I'd like to buy a used trailer and haul it over to Kirtland AFB, NM. However, I'm not sure I want to use a dolly or car trailer. I could rent, but I figured I could probably buy just as cheap as I could rent for a 3 day drive. Does anyone have any ideas? Please drop me a message or respond with serious remarks only. I appreciate it.

Thanks,

Clint

I'd probably just price shipping it.
Moving that far is a PIA.

When i went from Fort hood Tx to Columbus Ohio I hardly even noticed the truck on the tow bar behind me...even when it shredded a tire I didn't notice it. But I was towing with a 24 foot moving van though.
If you have any mountian passes between point a and point b...I don't recomend a tow bar onless you are driving something huge. (like a 24 foot moving van)
however, if it is fairly flat ground...a tow bar is hard to beat if you are a man with common sence.

The truck should have no problem towing that little ol`Trailblazer to NM.I`d use a dolly, save the extra weight of the trailer.

Thanks for your info. guys. I am using the Trail Blazer to pull the 72. I know I would have to disconnect the drive shaft using either a tow bar or a dolly. Does anyone know anybody in the Washington D.C. area or nearby that has either setup for sale?

if you use a car dolly, make sure you measure the outside tire width to fit the dolly....some dollys are not made for these trks.... just my 2 cents worth.....and if you rent a car trl, sometimes the trk dont fit those either.....

Second the idea of making sure the tow dolley is wide enough. I went down to San Antonio with my 2004 Dodge Caravan fully expecting to rent a U-Haul tow dolley. Picked up the dolley and it was too narrow for our trucks (68 c-10 Short Stepside). Luckily the guy next door had a used tow dolley for sale for $400. Made it back to Tusla. Since then I have pulled a 71 Short Stepside from Eastern Kentucky and a 4x4 from Northern Louisiana. Tow dolleys are great since you are mainly pulling and not carrying, like with a car trailer. The only bad thing about a dolley is don't try backing up with them. Dolley goes one way and the truck goes the other. So plan your parking.

If your truck is a stick shift, you can leave the drive shaft hooked up.

I have used a tow bar before to pull from nebraska to illinois in the winter (had a snow storm that day) and it did great. If I where you being from up north unless the body is absolutely cherry I would sell it and by a nm RUST FREE TRUCK and work on it.

Let the Military pay to move your truck, and drive the Blazer, or are you wanting to pocket that fat travel check your going to get.
