OK true confessions time. I was at the lake and always set my parking brake (69, drim brakes rear) on the ramp when launching and recovering the boat. Not that it does me much good because the rig would still roll if not in park, with it set, just more slowly. Anyway I managed to drive about 12 miles before I stopped. You could sure smell them (no visible smoke) and the drums were as hot as a steam iron when I stopped. No signs of fluid on the outside. Let them cool for about an hour and went on with no apparent problem.

What should I be looking for when I get around to inspecting them?

cracks in the brake lining is sign that they got pretty hot, if they are it is probably time to get some new shoes. If everything looks good then you just need to adjust the star nuts so that the brakes engage when you set the parking brake.
