Anybody switch over from new car and regret it?

Basically I am thinking about switching over from my 2011 jeep wrangler and getting something older. I am sick of paying $350 a month for it. Always wanted to get a old "beater" truck to have has a DD that I don't have to worry about dents/dings and can take hunting with me.

Anyone switch over and regret it? Hard to go from ice cold a/c, power window and no road noise to an old clunker?

Maybe to much up keep for a daily driver... I dunno, just thinking out loud.

Not at all. I went from a 2007 BMW 335i 6 speed sedan to a 70 GMC truck.

$699.81/mo. SUCKED. Yes, the car was crazy fast .. but so was the depreciation.

I went from a 99 s10, (alright not much of a step up), to the 68 as a DD. I couldn't be happier. It's easier to fix, cheaper to fix, more fun to drive, and I don't look like every other joe on the road. The only thing I wish it had was a better radio and that will soon be taken care of. I didn't miss the AC over the summer, I just used the interior vents and the vent windows. I don't know if I'll ever buy anything brand new after this truck. Older cars have so much more personality and style.

Yeah I went from a 1972 Chevy Lwb to a 1968 Chevy Swb and have been loving it ever since!!!!

No, the cost savings more than covers the gas plus its cooler, roomier, something I can work on and enjoy.

Sold my 2000 Ram for my 70 C10. Gas and a battery is the life for me. Computers suck.

Just about anything you do to these trucks add value too .. Do something to a new one and it's hard to get your money back out of it.

I just hate to buy new and drive it off the lot. 20% value loss.. BAM. Sucks. It's 'used' now. Then 10-15% more value lost each year there after.

Buy new, keep it three years. It's worth half what you paid for it if you're lucky. (give or take) .. especially trucks. $35-40K for a new Silverado? Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have one! .. I'm just not taking the hit anymore. I'm 39yrs old, and I have owned 38 cars in my life. I have taken a freakin beating on new cars. I have just realized, while older = more gas .. new = value lost. Which is worse?

It either goes out the tailpipe, or out the window. (?) Why bother with 40+% value LOST just to drive a truck you can't work on. Something goes wrong and it's a trip to pay labor rates, etc. I'm just over it.

My only issue with an old vehicle is reliability. I hate having to lie under a truck in the rain changing a starter in the snow (which I have done). The are good as a DD, but plan on having a backup and AAA.

There harder to insure correctly if driven daily

Gas mileage sucks

Safety (brakes,airbags,seatbelts)

I love my truck and it makes me smile everytime I start it. With that said its 40+ years old and has the technology of a tricycle. I commute 70 miles a day and have a wife and 3 y/o that I want to keep safe.

If I was 20 years old and had to drive 4 miles to work/school my thoughts would be different.

Not trying to single you out, but looking at your signature makes me wonder if the 1998 Tahoe is your DD. If so, I wouldn't mind driving a bad @ss 2dr Tahoe 5 days a week and a C10 on the weekend!

I went from a '11 Jetta to my '67 C20. No complaints, except gas here is almost 5 bucks a gallon!!

.. I will say, I have found a CRAZY nice 2006 Z71 with 44K original miles. Black, friggin sweet. I think I can pick it up for about $15k. I would looove to have it for my backup. It is the nicest, straightest black truck I think I have ever seen.

If I lived in a rural town and did not have to comute alot I could see me driving my truck everyday. My truck is mechanically sound and everything was replaced but you cant beat the comfort of a brand new vehicle here in south florida highways. Living in a metropolitan city driving an old bucket is out of the question for me. Of course I am fortunate that since I work for toyota I get a brand new car every 5k miles so it does not cost me anything but if I did not have that perk i would still drive a brand new vehicle being that I am in the automotive I usually make out great with car purchases and resales.

I prefer to drive my bucket once or twice on the weekends weather permitting....

I commute 6 miles each way and what you say has crossed my mind. I put 3 point belts in and a sway bar for handling. Disc brakes are coming maybe. I don't take it on long road trips but around town I use it exclusively.

sell the jeep, buy an old truck and something like a 2001 saturn then invest the rest. Also, theres a big difference in practicality between a no PS, no PB, 6cyl three on tree and say a 71-72 disc brake, PS, PB, 350/th350 AC truck. You can have the modern conveniences and the style- that is what makes these such great trucks.

drove it all round the north island for 2yrs with the i6 untill the crank pully nearly fell off and decided on quick tidyup
now its rebuilt and has a temporary 305 in it and i drive it every day to work - 35km round trip and go to swapmeets/visit dad and sister etc all round the north island again---LOVE IT
its original inside-lap belts,heater/demister,no radio/music



you get more "SMILES PER MILES" in an old pickumup.

I retired in 2008.

During all our married and child-rearing lives (the last 40 years) we usually had two decent cars...sometimes new or newer, sometimes not..while I played
with or built countless motorcycles. In the earlier years, she always had the "good one". And I usually had one that was pretty reliable, but not a long-hauler
(just a commuter, upscale beater, etc.).

Now, I'm trying to get the 3-year build truck to the point of reliability so that I can dump the Altima Hybrid, have the boss (wife) keep
the small SUV, and I'll start thinking more about where I drive.... and why.

Cruising in the truck, and combining cruising with doing a few chores at the same time...maybe the longest being a 70 mi round trip....
and having a vehicle I built myself...with no computer, 915 gigabite battery, etc. That's the goal. I can be "green" (read, $5.00 gas)
in a vehicle that gets a third the gas mileage by just thinking about what I'm doing.

And, if I need to go on a road trip sans the "little woman", Hertz or Enterprise is my new pal.

I've never had a new one most i've ever payed for a vehicle is 7,000 (97 pickup) i drive most of the time. Going on a long trip i usually rent a car save wear on mine. It irks me when people say i don't drive this old stuff because of it's not safe etc. they drove them everyday years ago and got everywhere they needed to go without technology. It boils down to most of us has became pies with all them modern comforts etc. i was talking today with a lady at work to the fact that most of the simple things in life have been forgotten, and people are getting more anti social because they are usually glue to the hip to there phones etc.

My 95 GMC died on me and I dont carry a computer in my back pocket so I had to have it towed and shelled out $500 to fix some sensor. My 70 died on me and it took me 5 minutes to find the problem and fix it roadside. Newer cars can be just as unreliable than older ones and cost more to fix. I bought a 63 Valiant to drive to save a little gas.

Just as gasoline prices were beginning their climb in '73, I had a '71 VW Super Beetle, with some EMPI stuff on it. I had gotten married and bought a house. The first baby was on the way and those payments of $73.87/mo were weighing heavily on my mind.

So, I took it back to the dealership, sold it to them and bought a '56 Chevy 210 4-dr wagon, with a 265/3 on the tree, for cash. It was a good car, and gas was still under a buck a gallon. In fact, I don't think it hit 60 cents/gallon.

While these trucks are old school in design and maintenance, we all know that the newer (OBDII) vehicles offer easier diagnostics, and better fuel economy. However, I just want to grin when I recall the sound of that V-8 blowing thru the Flowmasters. The wifes' Lexus just doesn't do that for me in the same way.

I have a 2006 chrysler 300c Hemi that sits in my garage and hasnt been driven in a year and a half. I drive my 1978 c10 daily and my 1970 GMC on my days off.

My wife and I work at the same place, work the same hours and get along very well. We ride together most of the time. I could really do without a car at all..

I have her CRV, an Acura RSX and my GMC to drive on occasion. I guess its not a daily driver thing for me ..but I would if needed.
