burb questions

how hard is it to find a decent burb lately? i've been looking at my gmc lately and with another helper on the way it won't be big enuf anymore. it's go a good engine and other stuff. i'm wondering if a should just by a burb and build that up. then i can take all the family with me when i go to shows (wife'll be thrilled about that). anyone?

Location is everything. They are dime a dozen in Oregon and Washington state, elsewhere they seem to be scarce as hens teeth. I looked at about 3 each week from the nickle ads before I picked up my 68 for 700 bucks, just south of Portland.

Well, around here I actually think burbs are one of the most unsusal 67-72s to see. I actually have seen more 50th trucks and longhorns than burbs. I might have seen 7 or 8 of them ever.

Dime a dozen in OR?

That isn't really the case but I'm sure that could be relative to somewhere else. In the past have looked far and wide and paid decent price when found, usually many miles of plain ole use and little maintenance. Had to go to CA. for good burb body several yrs back. In my opinion, almost no where are they considered cheap. Some people run into good deals from long time owners, but in my experience 90% of these trucks have been bought and sold a few times over past 5 yrs and many are either altered beyond my taste or priced out of a decent deal. I always am keeping my eyes open for someones elses finished or clean project to replace mine with. If I could find one close to my liking further along than mine the price would proably be chepaer for me than sinking startup money into a worn-out 32 yr new truck.

Anyone have a clean 72 K20 with auto to take a 72 K20 with 4spd in as part trade in Western states? Mydads hip can't take a clutch any more. Doing auto swap aint going to be cheap.

Whats a rust free burb body worth? I have a original paint(mint green) body only, was a 4 wheel drive but has been stripped of everything but the frame and doors. Has clam shell rear doors. Drivers rocker was dinged and needs replacing but no other body work or damage. Don't know if I can get papers for it still as it has been off the road since 1974. If someone is interested, I can't do anything till April when the snow level drops as it is stored up north.

Burbs are great! I spent too much money on mine, of course. If more people get the fever, maybe some day there'll be more reproduction parts for burbs making restoration a little easier.

Burbs are great! I love driving around in mine, its pretty neat when guys say "where's the other door you only have 3 doors" I just tell them thats its a rare 3 door! Just kidding, but I do hear that alot. Good luck finding one they are getting hard to find especially around here. Randy

I gave up trying to find a decent one in the midwest. I looked in Texas and the west coast. I do enjoy driving my burb more than the trucks. If you plan on restoring, I would suggest buying a finished unit. You will be money ahead. Of course you may enjoy the process like me.

They are definitely hard to find in Montana, looked forever to find mine, but I was kind of picky on price and features. Got mine from autotrader.com in Denver. Had to fly down and drive back. You can also try cars.com and do a '82 or older search.

If your serious, look in all of the classifieds (on-line) in your radius.

You're definitely money ahead buying someone's finished project. Always spend a bit more than you can stand and you'll end up saving a bundle!

Bought mine for $4,500 with a nasty interior and have put in about $2,000 and haven't even started on the engine and body work (which isn't all that bad). If I'd have spent $8,000 or $9,000 I could have had a much nicer one, but without some of the options I was looking for. O well, someone has to lose money!

Ours hauls a ton of kids in style.

Good luck and have fun with it.

They are still around. You just have to kiss alot of ugly ones before you find the right one. I turned down a nice burb this summer just because i didn't have the time to go get it. It was a rust free body from california, off the Naval base. It came with a great running burb, 350/th350/ posi 3.73 for a whole $1500 asking price. I spotted the ad for it a few weeks later for $2750 and that was by the new owner. A body shop in the Elk River MN area.
I have found you just have to get out to the shows and meet people. The more feelers you put out the better chance of getting something. The last burb I got was the 71 K10. I talked to that guy 2-1/2 years ago. He still had my business card after all that time.
