Exhaust Smell ???

Every time I drive my burb, I smell exhaust. If just the drivers side window is down I smell it. Both front windows down, I don't. I've gone through everything and can't find a leak, headers, header flanges, etc. I don't smell it when I'm at a stand still idling. So...I've come to the conclusion that it's the fact that I ran the new exhaust pipes straight out the back, right beneath the rear bumper, and that the exhaust is coming in through the not very well sealed back hatch.

Have any of you experienced this? Any other ideas? Just like to see what the experts might have to say before I cut the pipes and put some turndowns or 45 deg turns out to the side (would that help?). Thanks in advance for any input.

Re: Exhaust Smell ???

I've heard of this happening. You are correct in that when the pipes end, if they don't exit the vehicle completely, that there could be some sort of "drift" back into the passenger compartment. From what I remember, the newer vehicles require that they exit the vehicle completely, and when inspected, if they don't, they will fail the vehicle because of this, something about carbon monoxide poisoning. On a truck, I've heard that it's ok to dump right before the rear axle, or anywhere after the cab, because there is no possible way to have the exhaust gases get into the cab. With a 'burb, it's probably the same as a car. I would just add tips to the end, so that they exit past the rear bumper, and you don't have to worry about redoing a lot of the pipes.

Re: Exhaust Smell ???

My exhaust man recommends running the pipes out the sides behind the rear wheels on panels & burbs for that reason.

Re: Exhaust Smell ???

On new Suv's the exhaust MUST exit the side, due to the facts stated above. What i would do, cut it, do 45's and have some nice Auto parts store polished tips out the sides, looks good, sounds good
