After 388 Days it FINALLY comes home!

Well, guys it went down on July 20th 2004 and came home today. I have some disappointments, but overall I'm very excited. One of the instructors told me when I get her back together to bring it back down and they would touch up anything that I wanted them too. I just got my 1000th post the other day and I figure by Sep 1st I'll have 2000 with all my soon to be questions. What sucks is I have to leave and go work the Titans and Bucs game so I can't even stay and play with it.

I did at least put on the tailgate chains

Talk to guys later.

You can BARELY see the flames which I think ROCKS!

Looks Great! I like the color. (There will always be some disappointments, that can't be overcome. What I learned from my first restoration I will apply to my second, my third . . . !)

Bryan,
Glad to see that you are a step closer to having it on the road! Take your time, there is no need to get in a hurry and risk messing anything up now. I know how a long wait can work on you, my K10 stayed in the shop 14 mos.

It looks great! I love the color, and the ghost flames work great with silver, IMO. BUT, now you have to change your board name, lol.

Good looking color. She looks like she is glad to be home and ready for some TLC. Was it you that bought new wheels and tires but left those on the truck during the body and paint? If so are they still for sale? LMK.

Nice Truck!

Thanks for all the good words guys. My buddy is coming over tomorrow(today) and we are going to do the 4/6 drop and put my 20's on hopefully. I've saved Txfirefighters 4/6 drop in a weekend thread.

Tx-yep those are the Boyds

Tomatocity-yes those are the Boyds that are for sale-$500

One question about the 4/6 drop that I couldn't find on Tx's thread was about the ball joints. How hard are they going to be to swap to the drop spindles?

Hey, remember me? At any rate - sweet truck! My son and I put 3/4 ton drop spindles on his '70 and it's pretty easy.

I hope this is relevant, because I'm not certain I understand exactly what you're asking. I suggest new ball joints because there are so cheap, but if you don't intend to replace the ball joints - there is really no work to speak of. Support the truck by the frame - not the lower A-frame. This should be obvious but... Then put a jack stand (or something) to stop the lower A-frame from dropping all they way to the floor. That keeps the spring from coming out and hurting you. Take the ball joint nut off, flip it over (so the castle is on first), screw it on far enough to protect the threads on the joint, and smack it with a big heavy hammer. The tapered part of the ball joint will come out of the spindle - and stay attached to the A-frame. Do the same for the upper, then just bolt on the new spindles.

If you want to replace the ball joints and they are original, you'll need to get the rivets out. Just grind off the head and pound them out. There are four on each A-frame. Take your time to ensure you don't scratch the A-frames. It'll take some patience and a 1/4" punch. Depending on which way you want to drive the rivet out, you may have to grind each one twice. First to get the old ball joint off, and again to get it out of the A-frame. The new ones go on with nuts and bolts supplied with the ball joints. BTW-this process is MUCH easier with the A-frames on a bench.

I hope this helps, good luck.
