What do you tow.

I have been away from my project for a long time ,however I'm getting back to finishing and getting it on the road and use it.
I will be towing a small travel trailer for camping. Currently I have been using a 64 Dodge D100 to pull the trailer.
The project I'm working on is a 68 C10 , equipped with power steering, power brakes, a TH400 and A/C. and best of all a new crate 290 hp 350 ya.
The Dodge is basic with a stick ,tough truck but I'm ready for comfort
Want to see what you tow, be it an RV or a workhorse trailer . Stock truck ? ,extreme custom ? or anything in between.

Re: What do you tow.

I pull a 8x14 trailer with 3 quads regularly. K10 with a 350 and she pulls like a champ. Pulled the trailer up Parley's cannon in second gear @ 55 and 3k on the tach.

Re: What do you tow.

Back in the mid '70's I use to pull a '26 Dorsett cabin cruiser 45 miles to the Sacramento Delta almost every weekend during the summer with a bone stock '72 GMC 3/4 ton with a 350 and 4 speed. Never had a problem at all and had plenty of power.

I tow my 20' tilt bed trailer with the Blue '67 1/2 ton. It has a 454/th400 with 3:73 gears. Works like a champ....

Re: What do you tow.

Don't have a hitch on my '69 yet, but when I do, I'm thinking about making a matching bed trailer for it. Right now I use the '87 to haul hay, on an 8x20 wagon. I usually can fit about 4500lbs on the wagon, with another 1800 in the bed.

Pull this toyhauler. It's a little over 6000lb with the full dress Harley in it. We went out west and traveled 5700+miles. The truck never missed a beat.

This haywagon weighs a lot more than the truck - it had this C10's undivided attention...

When I was 14 -15 years old we towed wagons like that with a matched pair of Percheron horses. Only 2 HP

2 HP but 8-wheel drive! The hayburners at that farm never do any draft or pulling - just ride teenage girls around at great $$... Parents have bucks.

That C-10 in the picture is strictly stock, 1/2 ton obviously, Coil Springs. 350 that runs like its fuel injected (perfect). It's wearing a Holley - so I guess it's not strictly stock! I've never done the math to see what the differential ratio is.

I've always wondered what the GVW for this particular truck would be, and towing capacity. Newer trucks are clearly stated, but these older ones are a bit harder to measure. The manual tells you what you can weigh, front and back axle, but I don't know how calculate the towing capacity number, or combined weight number from there. I bet if you asked 10 experts, you'd get 10 different answers!

Re: What do you tow.

Mine tows a snowmobile trailer with up to 3 sleds on it, and one in the bed sometimes. Wish I had a different hitch setup, I don't like using the bumper mounted ball setup it has now.

Re: What do you tow.

Not to hijack a thread, but what type of hitch are you guys using. I have a original Draw-Tite (1-7/8" ball) hitch that was on my stepper when I bought it. I'd like to pull a 2200# lite-camper. Should that hitch suffice? Thaks for the pics too!

Re: What do you tow.

Back in the day when my grandparents owned the truck, they would tow a 34 foot RV trailer that I would guess to weigh 12,000 lbs. They would tow from San Bernardino to San Diego to the beach for the winter. This route has some good hills to climb-truck had a stock 350 w/ turbo 400 and 4:11 rear, a/c p/s,p/b customcamper20 with the optional overload spring. (now it has a 454 with the turbo 400 and 3:23 rear end). Frame mounted hitch

Re: What do you tow.

What do you all think of pulling a 10k pound (capacity) car trailer with a SWB using a frame mounted hitch with weight distribution hitch and obviously a brake controler?

Currently I use my '03 suburban for pulling duties, but have thought of putting a hitch on my 69. My big concern is the wheelbase, being relatively short for that kind of load.
