New owner of a 69 c10

Just got my 69 yesterday and an so excited and ready to get it on the road! Right now first thing I have to tackle is fixing the brakes, guy I bought it from said that the rubber hose on the rear to the brakes was causing the brakes to be "soft." so I need to figure out how to get them back right, you can pump then and get them to stop but it's defiantly not safe for the road, anyone out there to give me some advice on where I should start with the brake issue?

Welcome! Since brakes are kinda important, I'd save up enough coin to do the job right. Change out your three brake hoses, do the wheel cylinders, shoes, master cylinder, check the drums for cracks, etc. Post some pics of your truck when you get a chance!

Welcome from Texas! Brakes were pretty much the first thing I had to fix on mine. New MC/booster/cylinders etc.

Watch out! I was going to replace my brakes, figured I should upgrade to disc on the front, figured I might as well rebuild the suspension, and steering, might as well upgrade engine and trans and so on and so on.

2.5 years later, I have a daily driver with a totally new drivetrain, brakes, suspension and steering!

Next ins interior and paint!

Its fun, but watch out for that snowball rolling down the hill!

Oh I could see where it would kinda get addicting! Will start with the MC, boosters, and cylinders first XD

Sup buddy! Welcome to the forum.

Check out this link. I'm a firm believer, if I don't know how it works first, I'm likely not going to be able to fix it.

Read through this:

It will make it make a whole lot more sense. Then, I'll tell you it's easy to do. Drum brakes are pretty straight forward and the parts can be purchased locally at Orileys, or whatever store you may have. Napa, etc.

What I'd do is plan to replace the brake shoes, wheel cylinders, have the drums turned, and bleed the fluid all the way out. Replace the old crusty stuff with all new fluid.

When you stop at a redlight. Are the brakes firm .. then as you sit in place the pedal fades to the floor? .. or are they just soft in general?

They are just soft in general, thanks so much for the link and info! I am going to work on it soon as I get off today and get some pics for you guys. I am headed to read the link now for a better understanding!

Took the brakes apart today and found my issue, looks like the cylinders were blew out and they were seaping break fluid out both sides.

Thanks for the pic! I just finished rebuilding the rear cylinders and installing them today! Bled them and everything seems to be better as I parked the truck I noticed after I did a little stop before entering the garage that after pumping the brakes a time or two that what seemed like the front brakes locked down and were dragging as I parked it, looks like I am going to have to take the fronts off as well, I hope it isnt the rear doing the dragging as I do not want to have to go and redo them so soon!

looks like a very nice place to start you should also check the metal lines they are as old as that truck and easily rust but with new pressure from new cylinders very like to weep at least. Welcome to the forum from Va.

Thanks for the welcome! Yeah I hope to get the brakes sorted in the next day or so then I am on to the trans and see what I can get done on it!
