Fuel pump install?
Im ready to install my new fuel pump. Ive used a hacksaw before to hold up the pushrod, but is there an easier way to put the pump on? Thanks!

i like to use the dip stick.
hold the rod up put the dipstick in bend it over into a rainbow and jamb it againts the fenderwell. if its a sbc you can pull the bolt out of the front of the block and use a longer one and it will jamb against the rod and hold it inplace. do not for get to take the bolt out before you start your motor, you WILL destroy the rod AND your cam if you dont. |

Put some vasoline on it, just pack it up in there to hold the rod in, its oil based and just kinda goes away, Doesn't take much, just enough to hold it up. Then if you're really paranoid about it gumming things up just change the oil after.

The camshaft has an eccentric (lobe) on it that moves the rod in and out.If you roll the engine over until the lobe is on the opposite side as the rod then the rod will go up further into the engine and there will be less tension on the pump lever. I just set the pump lever in place and start the bolts. I think lining the balancer mark with top dead center will position the shaft lobe as I stated.

bring it to #1 TDC that will clear the lobe from the rod, then pack the rod with grease, press the rod in with your fingers and that will hold it and allow you to finish the install

whats your engine size?
I have a 67 with a 327. on that engine they use a kinda set bolt to hold the push rod. the bolt my not always still be there depending on other owners and such but there is a bolt hole on the front side of the engine close to where the fuel pump mounts that you would screw in a bolt and it pushes up against the push rod holding it in place. then when your done there is another bolt hole a little further back where you store the bolt for when you might have to do it again. |

Could this be the problem on my 292? I put a new fuel pump on it back when I was in Jr. high school. It hasn't run since (18 years ago). It will run if I put gas directly into the carb but not from the tank itself. I guess I'm not quite sure what is the procedure your talking about is.

if you look at the front of the block directly in front of where the fuel pump shaft will be in the block you'll find a tapped and threaded 3/8" standard thread hole that you can install a bolt to hold the shaft so it won't slide down during fuel pump installation. this threaded hole is there from the factory for just his purpose. it is on all small blocks that are equipped with mechanical fuel pumps, and went away with the advent of tbi engines that used electric pumps. the hole will have a short bolt installed to prevent oil leakage during operation. you should remove the short bolt, as it will not contact the shaft due to it's short length and install a longer one, but ONLY INSTALL IT FINGER TIGHT. if you torque down on it it will gouge the fuel pump shaft and chew up a few internal parts. if you use this method please remember before cranking the engine after pump installation remove the long bolt and replace the short one.
