Tuned port 350's

I want to go a different route so I thought i would source up a Tuned port 350 for my truck. I wanted to know if there were any members on this board that have tackled this motor swap. what the pros and cons might be. It seemed to be the rage back in the late 80's and 90's. Thanks for your input.

I am currently working on putting a TPI on my 78 Jimmy. There is a guy on my forum that has already completed it and is trouble shooting some issues with it.

Re: Tuned port 350's

My only suggestion would be to start with a complete TPI engine and go from there.

I started by retrofitting a TPI system on an engine that I'd put together, and tuning it up wound up being seemingly impossible, so I bailed out on it at a pretty major loss

Re: Tuned port 350's

It will bolt right in. If you can get a complete and running car, that would be the way to do it so you get all matched parts. The biggest part is all the wiring and fuel system. Problem is that most of these cars that are up for grabs are long worn out by now, and the ones that have been preserved are too nice and aren't cheap for dismantling. Most were 305's anyway.

You can put the TPI setup on any 350 though. Infact it will be more simple if you stick with a 2 piece rear seal type motor since thats what you should have now. Using older heads you will have elongate the center intake bolt holes on the intake a little but it's very easy to do. The only other thing you need is a fuel injection specific cam, but any of the major cam grinders will be able to set you up with the cam you need.

I would try to find a wrecked yet complete car with a working TPI setup and strip all the TPI related parts on it, then use whatever motor you have or can get your hands on and install the fuel injection cam in it.

Re: Tuned port 350's

If you find a setup, try and go for the mass air flow instead of the speed density set-up.

The one that uses a MAF can more easily adapt to engine modifications.
There are more pros to the MAF vs. Speed density that I can't remember right now.

I have seen Tune port set-ups at swap meets for as much as $400 without wiring or ECM.
I also saw a complete TPI motor for $450 With wiring, sensors, and PCM at the same swap meet. I just wasn't in a buying mood.

Good luck. This is somthing that I have been looking to do for a little while now.

This site looks to have some good info on what you will need http://sethirdgen.org/tpi1.htm
They say on this site that the MAF set-up is less desireable, but I can swear I have always read otherwise.

I can't find the site that educated me on the swap. Used to be in my favorits on another computer.

I bought a complete 86 IROC and swapped my TPI in. It definitely helps to have the whole car. I bought the factory Helm manual and that heped immensely as well. Chevythunder, the site Russell posted was great too. I bought a few specialized parts (VSS and an air intake elbow) at www.jagsthatrun.com

easy swap man, bolts right it. All you need is a fuel system and some wiring. Give Dana a call at East Coast Electronics 814-323-3021. He does a lot of wiring for me when I do not have time to do my own.
