Door latch linkage orientation

Hey all,
Can I get the correct linkage orientation for the door latch? I have seen the long skinny linkage running parallel with the ground and then I have also seen it connecting on a 45 degree angle. I have attached a pic of the angled version. Which is correct? Does it matter?

Re: Door latch linkage orientation

It will work better if the arm is in the parallel position. The other way puts a lot of strain on the latch and it pulls harder. Just speaking from experience.
