My 84 gmc swb project
first off, this is a great site. lots of useful knowledge. anyways, ive always wanted a square body gmc/chevy and finally got my hands on one. its an 84 GMC high sierra. around 65xxx original miles on the truck it self. straight body hardly any rust. picked it up for 3k. it had.. a 383 in it when i bought it a couple of months ago. i was driving the day after i got it and blew a piston. tore it apart and found it had another blown piston in it, so now im building a 350 to put in her. im taking lots of pics of my progress so ill keep yall updated. thanks for checkin it out -- Kyle from Beaumont TX

Re: My 84 gmc swb project
Paint it any color but black!
Joking, but I painted mine black but I wish I had done it in red or blue or silver....just to make it stand out. If you're doing a frame off restro, it makes it easy for anyone to tell that you put the hard work into it!

Re: My 84 gmc swb project
got word the other day my 383 short block is ready, just gotta go pay the balance and pick it up. can't wait to get it together. also fought with the upper control arm bushings for an hour and a half but got all 4 air hammered out. also did a little more touch up with the blaster in the pumpkin to get the grit out of all the nooks and crannies.

Re: My 84 gmc swb project
Uhh, unless your new control arm bushings came with new outer sleeves (the poly ones don't AFAIK) you just shot yourself in the foot. Even the OEM MOOG bushings don't have the outer sleeves.
AutoZone has a bushing tool kit that presses out the old bushings and leaves the outer sleeves intact. It also presses in the new ones opposite of removal, and you'd have been done in less than half the time it took to hack them out with your air chisel... |

Re: My 84 gmc swb project
ok. sorry for delay. been busy with work and house renovations. found out my donor block wasn't able to be punched out so i had to buy another block.. picked up the (new to me) 383 short block. put the heads on. got chromo push rods. put the rockers on. found out all the intake valves had been ground down to far so the self aligning tabs were resting on the spring retainers. so back to the stock rockers for now... but did get my oil pan and center bolt adapters for perimeter bolt covers in. also ordered my dress up kit. will post those pics soon.
