Guy I know told me one day that if you replace the intake gasket on a 350 and crap gets down in the oil pump that you could drain the oil and put 1 gallon of desiel and something like 6 quarts of tranny fluid and run it for a few minutes and that would clean the oil pump filter? I think he is on dope but just thought I would ask.

Neither of those two chemicals is a lubricant. Sounds to me like your lookin to blow something up in more ways than one.

Thats like 10 quarts of fluid, your gonna have a geyser until evey seal on the motor gives up.

I've heard of adding a small amount of trans fluid to your oil to clean everything up though.

I'd run it with the old oil in it for a few to wash everything down to the pan and then dump the pan.

Generally stupid idea, but auto trans fluid is a fantastic detergent oil so adding a quart to an engine has been a favorite in the past with good results.

Just not by itself

I have added ATF to my oil right before an oil change to clean up sticky lifters. It has always done the trick.

Anyone who has ever had contaminated oil with fuel or water, will agree that it takes about 4 or 5 oil chainges to get it all out.
I keep thinking about this when i see the super oil chainge deal at the juffy lube places....

Don't do it. It'll clean your engine out OK...but it'll cause thousands of miles of damage in mere seconds.

thx all. I did not know the tran sfluid acted as a detergent. I will try adding 1 quart and see what happens. If not I have scheduled putting a new 350 crate in this yr. Thanks for info though.

to clean older engines i'll add a pint of marvel-mystery-oil and run for a day or so b-4 changing my oil ,has seemed to work well over the years

One of my stepdads was a Caddy Certified Mechanic. This was a trick he taught me many years ago.. You do Not want to run it long, but yes it works. Then they did a Double oil change .. And down the road it went..

I have done it and necer had a problem, but you have to do what you feel is best..

I've never done it as part of maintinence, but I always throw a qt of atf in and drive 10 miles or so before a rebuild. It really seems to help clean things up, sludge and what not. I've heard it's very hard on seals.

I had a friend who claimed that putting one quart of kerosene in with the oil for about 500 miles helped clean the engine.

Had a freind who bought a 72 Dodge Dart with slant 6 225ci. with a lot of miles. Don't think the car ever had regular oil changes. He wanted to clean out sluge in engine. I told him I didn't think it was a good ideal, but he bought some engine flush (Reslone) anyway. Well he added a quart and started engine. Engine ran for about 2 min and started to knock. After he pulled the oil pan, he found out why the engine started to knock. The screen on the oil pump was clogged with sluge. This one of those times when it an't broke don't fix it. He only paid $200 for it but it was his only transportation. I think he learned a valuable lesson. B.B

Well I guess you could say Reslone works

I read in a mag,Car Craft I think,that a quart of trans fluid every third oil change was a good idea.I've never done it,just don't seem right.

I do not think in this day and age this should be necessary with the oils that are now available. Engines are running at higher temps where the 'sludge' will not build up. If you have a fairly new engine and change the oil regularly you shouldn't have any problems at all. I pull engines apart that have close to 300k on them with regular changes and they look cherry inside.
