Is it possible? Get my truck from WA to KS?

OK, first I want to start off this by saying for right now this is hypothetical.

Currently I have my 69 pickup that I'm working on. The problem is I may be moving from WA to KS next month, this is assuming that I get the job I interviewed for last week. If I don't get that job, I don't have the problem right now.

As it stands right now, my wife says I have to sell this truck. I will be taking my 68, I have a car trailer that it will be towed back to KS with us. The moving truck will be towing the G8. So, 2 drivers + 2 trailers = No room for the 69.

I would sell the truck, but its not finished yet, and even if it was, I don't know if I could sell it in the time frame I have. Plus, I really don't want to sell it cause its cool.

So here's the question/idea: Have members of this board drive it back to KS for me. Kinda like the truck hitch hikes across the country, getting passed from driver to driver. Maybe one member drives it 20 miles to the next town, or 200 miles on their weekend shopping trip. I don't know.

I was thinking I could leave a digital camera in the truck, and when I got the truck back, I could post all of the pictures of the trucks journey. Also, as members met to exchange keys, they could snap some shots and post to give us all an update.

I also thought this would be a cool idea for some members to meet up as they passed the keys from one person to another. I know I've met many members of this truck board here in Washington, and plan on meeting many more once I get back to KS.

I have a couple of concerns.

Legal: Obviously I own the truck, and it is insured by me. So what happens if someone were to get a ticket and or in a crash along the way? Well I figure I'd right out some statement saying that I was letting whoever borrow the truck, so hopefully the cop would let it go, and not think its stolen or something. As for the insurance, I guess I'd be giving you permission to drive it, if you hit someone they're car is covered, my truck isn't (liability only).

Gas: I figured between the board, I could re-imburse members for any gas money they put into it.

Break-downs: Hopefully anything that might happen would be minor and could be fixed with regular parts store stuff with minimal costs. If something big/expensive broke....I don't know.

As for the condition of the truck. I just tore the engine down and re-gasketed the whole thing. The internals looked surprisingly great, so I put it all back together. I started it up and it ran. I think if I were to do this, I'd throw on a new carb, cause the one on it seems to have some issues that I haven't figured out. I'd also put on some new tires. The tires on it aren't horrible, but for everyone's safety and reliability, I think it would be in everyone's interest.

So what does everyone think? Is it possible? If it is, I might just have to convince my wife. And again, at this point, this is hypothetical. Hope to find out about the job and moving situation next week. (Wife is going to KS in Dec, cause she starts her job there in Jan. We have a house and I have a job in WA, so until one of those two things change I'll have to stay here)

Here's the truck as it sits right now. Some may have read the build thread

You can also advertise it locally for someone to drive it.. as long as you're reimbursing people.. you may as well pay someone a few hundred to drive it..and a cheap shuttle ticket no frills flight back to Washington..

Don't give them the flight home til they deliver the truck..

I guess that could work too.

I kinda thought it would be cool for guys from the truck forum to make a "road trip" for the truck and post up pictures.

Plus if some joe schmoe is driving it, and it breaks down, he probably won't know how to fix it. I figure most of us on this board could fix it (maybe with the knowledge of other board members if needed)

Re: Is it possible? Get my truck from WA to KS?

Why not find a vehicle transportation company to haul it for you? it may cost less in the long run, plus they are insured for everything they haul..

Good luck with the new job! I don't blame you for not wanting to sell it. It is a cool truck! And lastly, good luck with the transportation of the truck. If I were closer I'd help you out. Ryan.

Re: Is it possible? Get my truck from WA to KS?

I looked into shipping my 60 from my dad's house in penrose, colorado to here after i bought my house and most places wanted $750-1000 to ship it in ts non running condition. but maybe i could talk the mrs into letting me buy it if you have to go that route ack. Btw, when you had that thing on cl earlier this year i really wanted to buy it.

Yes but it does run and between the cost of the new tires and new carb that pretty much pays for the trip give or take.

I wish i had the truck and the shop! but the commute would be a killer!!

Re: Is it possible? Get my truck from WA to KS?

Ship it.

Say a member drives it 100-200 miles to the next town.
How does he get back home?
He'd have to have someone follow him, to bring him back.

Fuel costs to drive it?
I would rather pay a licensed and insured shipping company to have it moved safely.
Just my 2 cents.

Re: Is it possible? Get my truck from WA to KS?

I'm getting a truck hauled from Hamilton, Mt to Topeka, Ks 1400 miles, going to cost me $900, just to give you an idea. I had it advertised on 3 webistes, this wasn't the cheapest, the cheapest had a bad track record so I went with this guy

thats the one with the Saab right?

I would look into the shipping company myself... if you cant find a way to tow it yourself. I don't know what you are towing your 68 with but I did help someone load their fox body 'stang INTO their moving van so they could tow their dd acura. Also, when my budy moved up here from TX he put his CJ in his moving truck and packed around it and loaded his Liberty on a car trailer and packed around that too. Ryder and Budget have trucks that back right up to loading docks. Uhaul does not. It's because of people like us that Uhaul now charges for a dirty truck.

I do have to say the idea of the road trip is way cool though.

Re: Is it possible? Get my truck from WA to KS?

Haven't seen that you have a relative who could drive it for you, so I assume you already checked out that method. Traveling from WA to KS....time of year will be an important factor. In theory, you might find someone who is a retiree and maybe better able to have the time to do it for you. Then again, there might be someone on the lam who needs to "get away" and needs a ride to who knows where....or when you'll see it again...if you do. Not saying that the board harbors folks who are criminally-minded, just sayin' that you may be setting yourself up for a disappointment. Don't want that to happen. You're trusting your truck with people you haven't met. You don't know how they operate or anything about them, regardless of the good folks who are on this site. As for me, I'll trust anyone, once. The next time? Depends on how the first time went.

Yeah!

Someone cut together ALL the scenes with the car and pryor/carvey, but the language is pretty strong at the end, so I'll just post the search... copy and past "Richard Pryor - Moving (schizophrenia montage) " in youtube and it should be the first thing to pop up, it's 6:03 long.

Cool idea... Hope it happens, would be a neat thread to watch.

We are all truck guys, and I know if I could do it to meet a couple other truck guys I would..

Been on 3 major road trips, met a bunch of great guys, and have some great stories to tell on the way.

Why not trailer the two trucks, and I will come and take the G8 ( hoping its a LS3 G8) across the country, as long as you pay all the speeding tickets.

OR, trailer the two trucks, and try the hop-scotch cross country with the 6.0 G8, I bet you have some takers for that ride.

Ok, this is what I would do, trailer the two trucks and fly back and drive the G8 to the new location.

Why not store the 68 somewhere for now and take the 69 on the trailer and later on when you get settled come back and drive your 68 there? Then you can have the memories of driving your truck back and enjoying the trip?
