factory wheel backspacing 3/4 72 GMC Camper

Hey Guys:

New to site. Did some searches in the forums and couldn't find exact answer I was looking for. Got a 72 GMC 3/4 Sierra Granda bone stock with factory steel 16 1/2 in 8 lug wheels (2WD). Looking to upgrade wheels. Don't want to go wider than 8-9 inch. Are most 8 lug bolt patterns the same? What backspacing do I need if I want to be close to original? (4.5 all the way around) Great site!!

Thanks in advance for your feedback. Been searching for decent looking wheel for this truck. (Needle in a haystack) Not crazy about the modern wheel look. Like the aluminum slots but looking for decent chrome wheels for about $150 each. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Welcome !!! - Check Cragarwheel.com, see if they have anything you like, they have several 8 inch rims, 8 lug with 4.5 backspacing. Then check prices at Jegs or Summit. Lot easier to find tires for the 16 inch than the 16.5.

If you want stock looking wheels, anything over 7 inch will be hard to find or custom made. 92-07 F*rd van wheels are 16x7 inch and fit well I am told.

I have a link in the parts section as I am looking also - some good info there, there may be wheels there if you search around too that might work.

I Am not sure about the fit of newer Fords. I think it was in 03 that they switched to a metric size. It isn't a direct bolt on. I could be wrong on this, but worth looking into before purchasing rims off a Ford.

Prior to that, the 8 lugs rims are interchangeable from the 3 major American brands. I installed a set of steel 16 inch rims off a '00 Suburban. I got them at a real good price.... Free. A second set of 16 inch rims I got with tires for $100 bucks, including chrome beauty rings. The only thing is, they are 6 inch wide. That seems to be the common stock width.
Good luck with your truck and

The Rockcrawler rims I had on my '69 and '72 C-20's had 4.25" of backspace.
