Another breakdown
About having
Bad luck With my f****** Junk truck... Hi Guys , The outer ball bearing in the front right wheel blew away on the highway yesterday ... Just had the chance to pull over without crashing another car !! Strange happening , the hub cap is missing , the whole grease flew away... I just hope the bearing seat in the disk hub is not toasted... Has anyone an idea how much such a new ball bearing should cost ? why happens this to me , on a sunday ( cold & freezing ) night ? I met two patrolling cops who were kind enough to drive me 2 miles further to the next bus stop. I'm more & more thinking to thrown that bloody truck in a junk yard and buy a Ricer ( Ricers never break down... ). It's my third major breakdown in less than a year , I can not rely on this truck... most things new.. ricer or not dont break down. just the joys of owning something old. it happens to the best of us.

The bearings, races, and maybe the spindle will need your wallet's help.
It blew because of no grease. A modern bearing will last forever if you change the grease from time to time. This also gives you the chance to see a loose grease retainer cap and replace it. I use synthetic grease in mine to make sure and I change it every two years. |

repairs
Hi ,
I called my spare parts specialist this morning , it shouldn't be that expensive for the two bearings ( inner & outer ). In case the spindle and the hub are gone , I should easily find second hand pieces , within the admitted tolerances , of course. A guy I know has parted a few trucks some years ago... He sells a 1977 Blazer straight 6 , take a look at : www.bdc.be I should have checked the whole truck when I bought it. My fault !  I take some vacation next week , I know what to do ! Tell me about old cars... I came a little down now , will fix the truck , have some time to think what I will do with it . The Baron |

Nothing beats the older rigs..........they will get noticed more driving down the road.
And if doesn't seem to matter what shape they are in............... It's more of a personalized ride to me........

More luck than I thought
I dismantled the whole stuff .
I have more luck than I thought . I just need to replace the two ball bearings , there is no damage to the seats of the disk hub & to the spindle , in exception of the spindle's central thread , wich is a little damaged. I have to admit that american trucks / cars are tough ...and easy to disassemble. I have worked for years on Detroit Diesel two stroke marine engines ( 8-268-A ) , they were a real pleasure to work on... Noisy while running but astonishing tough... I think I will let the ricers by the dealers for a time... Glad to hear it wasnt so bad after all.
I hear you about getting rid of the truck. Everytime something breaks I get so mad. After its fixed and done Im so happy and think, why did I even think about selling this truck. Its funny, you have to remember that everything breaks. New cars break too, alot! Trucks and cars are very complex machines, they will break no matter what you do. You have ricers in Belgium ?  EDIT: My girl friend got a flat tire on her way to work Sunday. She wasnt sure what to do so she called me. I said Id go help her. I got there and Glendale Police was on the case. He had the car jacked up and the tire was almost off. He went ahead and finished off the job, then went on his way. Very nice guy. Im suprised he helped, considering she was in a abco parking lot (not blocking any road or anything).

when he said he'd get a ricer..he made me think of when a bunch of guys were hanging out at the local DQ and one of them had a really quick mid to late 80's civic hatchback (sticker mobile to boot) and it was built pretty heavily, turbo'd, nitrous, the stand-alone fuel management, etc....and he says to me...why don't you get a import....they never break down...and his friend (drives a '84 hurst/olds) says what the f*** are you talking about....you've had to replace your crank 5 times already in the last year.
heavily built chevy = change oil every 3k heavily built import = change engine every 3k lol

asked to my local dealer for prices : outer ball bearing : 23 US$ inner ball bearing : 31 US$ plus taxes , the whole : 65 US$ Not that much... Hey Baron, glad to hear you got the bearings for a good price. I live in Finland, and i'm constantly jealous because the Americans pay next to nothing for replacement parts and upgrades on these trucks (well from my point of view anyway)

BRRR ! It's cold up there... As you never change spark plugs , didn't you ever had some fuel freezing problems ? One of my friends owns a 6,2 Diesel Blazer , tough & reliable truck but too noisy for me , I wouldn't buy one for myself. about prices , I think we don't have to complain here in belgium : Some prices : front brake pads : 53 US$. air filter element : 9 US$. 2 new tires (BF Goodrich ) : 230 US$. transmission shaft X connection : 38 US$. Sealed beams LO/HI Halogene ( Impala ) : 30 US$ for both. I bought 2nd hand ( like new ) exhaust mufflers for the C10 & one fore part exhaust line ( muffler + front pipe to the cat ) for the Impala : 125 US$ But I fell over when I went to the local GM dealer to ask for prices for a new left front fender : 1035 US$... Huhh !! My father drives a Ricer ( 2001 Mazda MX5 Miata convertible ) , nice car to drive with , but a wallet massacre when you go to the dealer... one "US dollar" is now almost equivalent to one "Euro" , for the guys who didn't know The Baron _________________________________________________ 1979 C10 2WD long bed 1977 Impala 250ci "Ye Old Reliable" |

I know how you feel about the $1035 fender, i was given these prices:
New dash pad for 81-91 Chevrolet Blazer/GMC Jmmy (must be painted to match, does not include mounting hardware): €720 New 1989-1991 Chevrolet Blazer/Suburban Grille mid-section: €383 (ABS plastic with fake chrome, Chevrolet logo not included) New 1989-1991 Chevrolet Blazer/Suburban Headlight bezels for quad headlights: €109 each (same ABS plastic with fake chrome) After i got those quotes i stopped calling the dealer Normal items like brake pads, shoes, filters and other things that wear out are cheap here. By the way, that x-connection is a "U-joint" for the americans I haven't had any fuel related problems because my truck has a "cold climate package" and i change fuel filters religiously. I'm also a trained diesel mechanic so i know my way with diesel engines.
