A 235/70/15 wont fit.

I had new tires put on my truck the other day and had the guy save the best take off for my new spare since the old one had been under there since 1985.

The old tire was a 225/75/15 and was a tight fit.

With the new one, the original bolts were not long enough to fasten. I put a jack under the spare carrier and jacked it up as far as it would go, until the truck starting to rise, and no go.

I though about longer bolts, but I think it would have been hanging too low, especially after the planned lowering.

So I will have to find me a used skinny tire for a spare.

Probaly something everyone else already knew, but thought I would share just in case.

I'm pretty sure I had a 235/75/R15 on my 69 and it fit okay. I'll have to double check that.

How far below the bottom of the license plate do your spares hang down?

Mine looked like it was going to be too low.

Had it like this for a couple months. No problems. It doesn't seem much different from the stock tire that was there before

I believe your 3/4 ton would have come with a carrier to accommodate a larger tie than the half tons did. Not 100% sure though.

Mine looked a lot like yalls as far as distance below the tag, but my little C-10 is a lot closer to the ground.

We had a 235/75r15 under my dads 71 gmc with no problem. I forget a out adjustability of the carrier. That size is pretty close to the original bias tire size that came on 1/2 tons. Astro/Safari vans use a space saver in the 5x5 pattern if youre willing to go that route, but im not sure the spare tire carrier will tighten up enough!

I think the difference may be the 70 vs. 75?

I am gonna try putting it under there again just for fun, since it was such a joy the last try...maybe I wasn't holding my mouth right.

I let the forward/left bolt out as much as it would go and had no luck.

It did cross my mind, a doughnut spare (mmm...doughnuts), but I can get a used tire for $10 down the street.

Upgrade to a newer model cable lift, and fabricate a mounting bracket and drive shaft for it.

With any size tire wide or not that original tire carrier will get hung on something (curb, speed bump, hamburger wrapper etc).

I've had the original tire mount way back when? And got tired of loosing the tire when the bracket got hung on something.

Since I put the cable system on it I never even concern myself about it, if I do go off a curb and it bottoms out it just slides right over.

Yep, this is one of the best things I've done to the old truck. I got a chain hoist off a Mitsubishi truck, some scrap steel, some bolts & nuts, job done for a bit over $20.00 bucks! Nice thing is, the crank handle is long enough that once the spare is lowered, I can unhook the chain and pull the spare out from under the truck without ever touching the ground! (because you know darn well your flat will happen when it's raining.

the spare tire holder is garbage on our trucks. I had to take mine out the other day and needed a floor jack to take the weight off to release it. It would have really sucked on the side of the road. Oh and check your spare. Mine was flat and when I tried to fill it the dry rotted valve stem broke off. So now I have 2 tires with the tread seperated and 1 broken valve stem LOL. new wheels and tires on monday
