Polishing a 69-70 grill......

I have seen pics of 69-70 outer grills that are so shiny that they almost look like crome...........are these polished? On the Blazer board Dianne posted a pic of a new aftremarket outer grill, and it had a satin finish, are the NOS GM ones more crome looking?

The stock grills had an anodized finnish on them.I am polishing a grill right now.I used oven cleaner to remove the anodizing.Use fine paper to smooth out any scratches, and aluminum polish to shine it up.

Interesting.....

It must cloud up after the oven cleaner.........how are you going to protect it after polishing? What about the lettering? I guess you'll polish and then re-letter? Be interesting to see how it comes out.......

I am polishing a 72,so no letters. You will need to keep it polished, clear coat ,or powder coat with clear.Once it is polished,it takes a while to lose its shine.2o minutes of polishing with a good aluminum polish will keep it looking good.

My grill was in good shape other than the anodizing and minor scrathes.Spray it with easy off and let it work a little while, but do not let it dry.Rinse and repeat, till the finish is all off.I started with 400,pretty lite, were the scratches were. Then did it all in 800,1000,and finished with 1500.All are wet sanding.Keeps it from clogging the paper.I personaly use Bucshes polish, but mothers or something simular will work.To have a grill chromed would be big bucks. It needs to be polished first anyways.Chrome is a reflexing of what is underneath.

I am also doing my '69 grille. Is there anyone who can re-anodize it after I polish it? Can it be done by the do-it-yourselfer?

Did they polish it? And clear coat or powder coat it? Is there such a thing as clear gloss powder coat?

They polished it and removed some minor dings it had by hammering them out from behind. Mine was not cleared but they now offer some type of protection. High quality work!

I got some stuff at the parts store called
Blue Magic. It worked really well. Its not
that expensive, you might give it a try.
