Is there any reason I shouldnt shave the stake holes in my bed? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I am painting the bed on my 72 GMC 4X4 and the stake holes are a mess, who ever owned the truck in the past destroyed them, the last painter tried to fix the edges with bondo that fell off long ago. I have never used the stake holes in any of my trucks so I wont miss them. Are there any reasons I cant weld in some steel and get rid of them? Any tips on doing so?
I have a MIG and I am a decent welder, what kind of things do I need to be aware of to do something like this?

I don't see any reason why not if you never plan to use them. Just clean up the metal around it and weld in a patch, grind it down and paint!

I cut 16ga pieces to fit and welded them in. It took only a thin coat of filler to completly hide them.

I have the same issue..I think I'm just going to get the push down tie downs....this way If I want to strap a cooler down or something I'll have it...also if you cover them you still have the box inside the bed...

when I repaint my truck those holes will be welded shut forever.....

we welded/shaved ours. you can make your own patches or get them from member infanti .

Weld them over! The look is smooth and clean. The pockets below have holes in them which make excellent connections for bungy cord hooks to tie something off.

I filled mine

on my 72 I had, I had eye bolts through the stake pocket box on the inside of the bed for tieing things too. Might want to do that before you weld them closed.

Thanks for all the replies! They are going away today. I think I will weld a 3/8" nut in the bottom of the stake pocket before I seal them up, that way I can screw in an i-bolt or similar later if I need to.

I did mine about 10 or 15 years ago, time flies, welded in some home made pieces, skimmed some filler over them, painted and have never had a problem

I don't see why not, people shave stuff all the time. What I like about that is most people would never notice I like subtle things like that.

Yes, the paint is that old! It is the factory light yellow (LACQUER)

I got them done, I am really happy with the look, I wish I had done it in the first place, I would have saved myself tons of work. I used some 16 gauge nail plates, I had to grind off a little to get them to fit but that was easy.
