any suggestions for a mellow sounding muffler for a six
It's not that I am bothered by the sound of a stock muffler on my inliner (single exhaust of course), but I was wondering if anyone has found an aftermarket muffler that produces a "cool" sound without being loud and wild. My fairly new exhaust system is leaking at seal around the back of my 25"; round-body muffler. I thought this might be a good time to splice in a different muffler (pipes are 2.000 and perfect) that would give it a newer sound. Thanks for input.
NOTE: I searched for 30 minutes and cannot locate a thread that strictly covers this question. |

My 71 250 3 speed sounded really nice with a long glass pack.

Thanks for quick reply. Do you recall the name of the glass pack and how long it is?

I've seen quite a few people recommend Smithys and Porter mufflers for inline sixes. I don't have any experience personally with either on sixes but I do like my porters on my 350. They're mellow until you really lay into them. Not sure how that transfers to sixes though.

I remember the 57 PU my parents had when I was a teen. Straight 6 with a long glass pack and a turn down. Not too loud but you could always hear it purring. Outstanding.

Langdon's split headers, dual exhaust, largish generic glasspacks. V8 lopey idle and sounds like angry bees when I get on it. Very distinctive but probably not what you want.

I have a plain old turbo muffler on my 292 that I think sounds pretty good.

I'm interested as well, I have dual 22" smithy's on my 66 w/350 & it sounds sweet. But my 58 w/235 is super quiet, been contemplating cutting them off and going straight pipes, any thoughts? Or going the route of glass packs...i have very little experience with the inlines sound, good question oldcool

I ran the old Borla Turbo muffler when I had the L6 in another vehicle. It was the quietest straight through muffler I had tried and its durability really sold me on using their race mufflers on my race cars later. This is the equivalent muffler line I used on my L6 exhaust: https://www.borla.com/products/mufflers/proxs.html

I had a Pro XS on my Titan. I really like it. The Dynomax Ultra-Flo is a nice straight through muffler, too. |

I installed a stock muffler single in and dual out. 2" piping from front to rear. Muffler is mounted in the original location so the dual pipes extend a long way to the rear. It is a great way to have that dual exhaust throaty sound.

I have had a muffler off a 730 Case tractor (don't judge - it was FREE) on my 57 for 30 years. It sounds kind of like a british sports car......

I had a long Smithy behind the 230 in my '64 Biscayne. It had a nice tone, but no unpleasant resonation or booming going down the road. I have another one buried somewhere in the garage that will end up on my '66 shortbed.

I have a long glass pack with a turn down on my 235. Everybody thinks i ave a 350 when it's running because of the sound. I used what ever brand the muffler shop had in stock. It does has a resonation when going down the road.
