Re: How to change Manual transmission oil
Unless there's something unusual about your specific transmission, they normally have two pipe plugs. One on the bottom at the lowest point, and another one on the passenger side. Drain by pulling the lower plug until nothing drips out, then replace the plug. Remove the side plug and fill with oil until it starts to drip out the plug hole. Don't overfill, it should stop dripping before replacing the side plug.

Re: How to change Manual transmission oil
Make sure you can get the fill plug out before you drain it! I used to work in fast lube shops in my youth and would laugh when ever people would bring in a 4x4 and have the gear box fluids changed for 20 a pop especially on something like a Toyota. It would take 7 mins to do all four boxes and we used about 10 bucks worth of fluid for 80 bucks. Not sure what they charge now but that was twenty some years ago.

Re: How to change Manual transmission oil
I know when I did the clutch on a lil toyata, we used 20-50 weight gear oil.. I know for my th350 I use the dex3, 3speed auto.. But for manual trans and rear ends you use gear oil right?
Might as well throw a curve ball question in there..!! Posted via Mobile Device Posted via Mobile Device Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: How to change Manual transmission oil
Yah that's it the 80w-90 gear oil.. unless somebody says something else..they have higher grade gear oil, but....... Don't wear anything nice when doing the job... I have an everyday " not going out with the wife, ain't gotta look good, around the house" shirt, and I filled my rear end cause it was leaking, so ill just say every time I wear that shirt.......MMMMMMMMMM gear oil..distinctive smell..

Re: How to change Manual transmission oil
If your oil is really yukky you can run Dextron in the trans for 50-100 miles and drain that and put fresh 80w90 in.

Re: How to change Manual transmission oil
I have the 4 speed granny and I pop out the gear shift to fill it. Just fill it through the hole. Very easy.
Different story if it is a 3-on-the-tree. Last edited by Backpayne; 03-14-2016 at 04:18 PM. |

Re: How to change Manual transmission oil
I was thinking I'd have to run a hose and funnel all the way to the fill hole lol

Re: How to change Manual transmission oil
You can also buy a little hand pump you screw onto the oil jug. It has a tube that goes into the transmission fill opening. Pretty easy that way, too.

Re: How to change Manual transmission oil
The hand pump mentioned above will make it a lot easier. Also make sure you use GL-4 oil. I had trouble finding it locally so I ordered a gallon of 85w90 GL-4 from Amazon for less than $30.
