Re: wanting to move shifter from column to floor

is this a fairly easy task moving the shifter to the floor and is one kit better than another?

I think is easy if you have the skills, but the difference between one and another would be the quality

Re: wanting to move shifter from column to floor

I can remember I bought a hurst three speed floor shifter for my truck got it home and my dad said it says on the box that its a universal fit. that means it doesn't ft anything! he was right after three ears of monkeying around I put the stock shifter back in action drove it like that for seven more years! so, be careful. my money is on the stock set up! cheers, Pat

Re: wanting to move shifter from column to floor

I have a Hurst Indy in mine, that's the way I would go. Thing is, though, with the kit 1st gear and 3rd are in the seat if you have a bench.

Borrwoing C1069's hurst pic:

To get it away from the seat, I re-drilled the top hole back 1/4 in. At the top of the shifter, this translates into moving 1st gear away from the seat by 2 inches, which is perfect for me.

If you've got any questions, PM me, I'll try to get some pics of the modified shifter on the truck.

Re: wanting to move shifter from column to floor

If you use the right shifter there are no clearance issues with the seat. I had a Mr. Gasket #7667A shifter in my 67 gmc and now it's in my 65 c10. Shifter brackets are the same as the Indy but the handle bends forward at the bottom and then curves back toward the seat at the top and is 18" tall to clear the top of the seat too.
If you decide to put one in I have some install pics and tips I can post.

Re: wanting to move shifter from column to floor

Here ya go. Pics from the bottom side. This is on a 67 gmc with a non-synchro 3 speed. A 4 bolt side cover tranny. The 7 bolt all synchro tranny uses different shifter arms and the shift rods will be straight and not bent like mine. The centre bolt that goes thru the shifter arms and main body and thru the mount bracket is the biggest source of complaints on these shifters. That bolt and nut on the back side needs to stay somewhat tight or the linkage arms become loose and then the shifter hangs up between gears. The cure is to drill a hole through the nut and bolt and install a cotter key thru the hole. The shifter stays tight and works great forever too. I don't have a good pic of the cotter key thru the nut though. If you're not comfortable trying to bend up the arms I have one pre-bent you could make a copy from.

Very interesting . Put an Indy floor shifter in my '69 many years ago . When in first and third the shifter's on the seat . Also remember having trouble with a bolt getting loose . Fixed it with some Loctite .

Like I sad, drill out the top hole 1/4 inch, and it nets you 2 inches in distance by the time you get up to the seat. 1st and 3rd problem solved.
