What to use on my stainless trim?
After looking up the price for new stainless steel trim, I have decided to rehab the dull trim. So... what should I paint the black with: rattle-can OR should i spry it and then clear coat the whole deal? I like the semi-gloss look but im worried that it will chip and flake if i dont clear em.

Re: What to use on my stainless trim?
I have seen some trim that has been "restored" that is absolutely beautiful. The artisan first stripped the anodizing with oven cleaner. Then, he used a compound called Tripoli, and followed it with a fine compound. See, the material on this side trim is aluminum, not stainless. To protect the polished aluminum, I'm going to use Zoopseal, which is supposed to last for 3 years. It isn't anodizing, so it will have to be re-applied periodically as I understand the usage.
If you have small chipping/roughness, you can sand it out starting with some 600 grit and working your way up to the finer grades, like 2000 grit before using the Tripoli. As to the paint, a semi-gloss or semi-flat would be correct if it was on my truck.

Re: What to use on my stainless trim?
So true.
You can wetsand it, then polish it. (high grit, like 1200grit) Go to any auto parts store. They have "satin" trim paint. Spray on. Looks factory. Get some good autobody tape though. Makes it easier. Did it on a 69 GMC i had some years ago. Had that trim. Did all 12 peices. Took me about 4 hours a day, for 2 weeks. But it turned out AWESOME. Good luck.

Re: What to use on my stainless trim?
Thanks for the good information. I just spent all my spending money on the paint and wanted to cheep out on the trim and do it myself beause hey are very solid overall.
But, has anyone tried the clear-coat method and had good results? |

Re: What to use on my stainless trim?
I plan on following that thread to restore my trim then shooting a layer or two of Eastwood Diamond Clear over them.

Re: What to use on my stainless trim?
I started restoring my trim. After a couple of full days, I gave up and painted it. Now I don't like it, and am going to start all over again. Good luck, it's a time consuming tedious process.
OOPS! I sure drug this one up from the dead. Need to post on the right link. DOH! |

Re: What to use on my stainless trim?
It's always timely to talk about refinishing the anodized aluminum trim. Calling it "stainless" is understood, but not correct.
