Question what do you use to seal between the step fender and bedside, I know that they have that felt rap stuff but originally they just used sometime like caulking from the factory. Can I use some a small bead of clear silicone will that work?

I've got some rust there along the edge of the fender and the guy that's going to paint it[whenever I get that far] wants to use stuff he calls Metal To Metal, says it's the best. A little pricey but well worth it.

I preach on this stuff, but you should be careful about the silicone you use on any metal surfaces. Make sure the stuff you use is for automotive applications. If not, you will find that it causes rust where it comes into contact with the metal. I can say this because we used RTV extensively where I worked, and a bunch of it was used to paste ISO instructions to steel columns of the buildings. It WILL cause rust.

I saw in one catalog they sold "Fender Welt". It was a leathery/plastic gasket (for lack of a better word) that went between the fender and the bed side. I can't remember which catalog though.

I've also been told many times never to use silicone. I like the piping idea. one day when I have a million bucks I would like to weld and get rid of all the seams

My thing is guys I don't like the look of the felt around the fenders on some trucks. If your truck is black it would look ok but your truck is red I think it would stand out. Any more suggestions?????????

The fenders that came with my truck (they were removed when the truck was new to install tool boxes) had a putty like substance that looks a lot the stuff the electricians in the Navy used to call Monkey $h!t to seal wires going into pecker heads. A gray putty that is water proof and doesn't harden or set up.

My nephew is in the Navy and works on radio's and communications stuff...I'll have to ask him about the "Monkey $h!t and pecker heads". Exactly what are those navy guys doing?!?

On mine...I don't have the truck painted yet so I taped off where the outline of the fender is, painted it with that rubberized undercoating stuff, painted the Flange on the fender where it touches the truck with the same stuff then bolted it on. I figure two rubberized coated surfaces should seal pretty well and if its painted rust shouldn't be that much of a problem.

I don't think it stands out, blends in with the truck. Most people never notice it.

I think it stands out personally, nothing against you or your truck, it's a very nice truck, but when I put my bed back together I'm either gonna find some of the putty I mentioned above or something similar.

Nah, none taken

The fender welt was easy to install. You have to slit it and cut out triangle sections in the curves and I used a spray on adhesive to put it on the fender, then just bolt the fender to the bed.

I put it on the truck back in 97 and pulled the old stuff off last year when I redid the truck. There was surprisingly no rust where the welt was. I actually thought there would be....

Krue, did you think mine stood out? Honestly it won't hurt my feelings. I always sorta thought that it wasn't that noticable. It is a pain to install the fenders using that stuff.

The welt doesn`t do anything to help seal.It`s not a bad idea,but won`t seal the gap.There should be no gap anywat.Just a seam.The factory used seam sealer.Silicone is also bad because paint won`t stick to anywhere it`s been,including where you wipe off excess.Jim Carter sells the welting.I`d still use a sealer on both sides.The best thing to do is seal it so nothing can get between there in the first place.There`s a urethane tripolimer caulk for window glazing called Geocel I use in my siding business.It stays pliable and won`t crack,paintable,and works to bond real well.I`ve used it on my utility beds at the seams with great results.You have to finger it as soon as you lay it on,skins right up.Sealing from underneath is the big issue here for rust prevention.

Randy I noticed the welting on your truck, it didn't look bad, but I think it could look better. I've used the welting before and didn't like the way it looked on my truck, so now I pay attention to other stepsides to see what's being used, which is probably why it stands out to me.

BTW a pecker head is the box where wires enter and leave a motor or generator.
