My '69 Chevy and Updates

I've been lurking here and stealing idea's for my 69 C10 since I bought it a little over a year ago. Figured I would finally give back a little bit and post some pics. The truck is a mainly stock 69 LWB fleetside with the 307 and a wood bed. Here is the original rims and tires from when I bought it and my switch to '67 dog dishes.

Frame cleaned and painted. Oak Boards cut and grooves added. Treated with Vinegar and Steel wool for that "Iron Oak" look. Then about 20 coats of poly. I love the final look. Enjoy!

And finally, while I had the back of the truck apart. A nice new bumper and hidden hitch.

My mom always had the best advice. It was just a tad late. After a fall that involved blood, she'd say....."Careful!"

Agreed. I need to replace the floor in my '69 GMC Custom Camper and this treatment looks good.

Re: My '69 Chevy and Updates

It is actually a really cool natural process and supposed to hold up better than stain. Its commonly referred to as iron oak or midnight oak. From my understanding it is actually a chemical reaction between the tannins in the wood and the iron in the steel wool.

All you need is some pickling vinegar and some steel wool. Add the steel wool into the vinegar and allow to sit for a couple of days. Then take a piece of wood with a high amount of tannins (oak for example) simply brush on the liquid. The wood will turn a dark grey to black depending on two factors, the amount of steel wool and the amount tannins in the wood. The reaction is fairly immediate and does not seem to darken if you try multiple coats.

I did a few samples and kept increasing the steel wool until I got a rich dark color. The boards were virtually black until I used a brown tinted poly to bring a little bit of wood color back out. The final photo is taken in direct sunlight, must of the time the bed appears much darker.

Re: My '69 Chevy and Updates

Oh yeah, my original intent was to mimick the stock black pine boards but with a hard wood. I decided the black was a little too harsh and that's why I used the tinted poly.
