2001 camaro rearend
from a Z car with 2.73 posi right now. it is being given to me so i am wondering if it can be adapted to my 69' without majormajor modification. anybody done a swap like this? can it be done? is it strong enough for around 400hp? this truck won't be hauling or towing much and i would like the discs and 5 lugs also.

The 5 lugs are going to be the smaller 5-on-4 3/4" pattern, I believe. Not certain, but I think that's what the cars use. Trucks use 5-on-5".
Aside from that...400hp in a truck, well, are you going to have traction? If yes...I wouldn't be so sure. In the 3400lb F-body, in about 30-50 more hp with traction, they start having problems. A 4000lb truck with traction might be too much. But if you don't run slicks and let the tires go before the rearend, you should be fine.

Lots of fabrication there...I don't think it'd be worth it. Plus a 2.73 would be miserable in town. Sure, you'd be able to wind it to about 180 MPH, but it'll be a dog below 110.

the 2.73's would go away in favor of something a little lower of course, since its free i could afford a new gear set and some fabrication costs/

Sheesh. Every week somebody wants to put a 7 1/2-7 5/8" ring gear POS in their truck. NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO (Is that enough Nos?) Anybody who runs the Camaro/Firebird hard ends up replacing the rear with something else. If a Camaro rear was suitable for a truck, GM would put it there already. If you want a late model rear to swap into your truck and you want disc brakes, get a 6 lugger from a 2000-2002 or if you've got 5 lug, go for the Impala SS 8.5" 10 bolt which gm DID put in a truck. Another option for six luggers is a light duty 3/4 ton semi-floater 14 bolt on some 3/4 tons from 88~96. Even better for 2 wheel drive trucks, just build your 12 bolt. You've already got it and can get a disc brake setup for $400 like BobbyK. Camaro rear is too narrow, too thin axle tube, not enough ability to shed heat from the brakes, designed for a lighter car with different weight distribution, etc. etc. etc.

That rear is crap!! Trust me!! I just finished pulling one out of my Z28 and replacing it with a Moser 9"

Its not increditbly hard to put that rear end in your truck. I put a 89 Iroc rear under my truck before I got the different one I have now. I was concerned about strength. But I'm putting a locker with 295's out back behind a 500hp small block and a 700R4. I have a tendancy to drive really hard and do some racing. So I dumped it for a stouter piece.
The weld on axle saddles are 60 bucks I think. You will also have to get a different panhard rod kit if you don't have one. Earlyclassic has the one I used. It attaches to the passenger side trailing arm. a really nice set up. Its not hard at all. Just takes some patients. I can give you basically what we did to get them lined up. Will it hold up?? You need to look at what motor your running, what gears and how you drive. If you've got a serious lead foot, like racing, spinning tires you need a stouter piece. If your just building a mild small block and yoru gonna be riding around town with no harsh abuse, that rear end will be just fine. Alot of guys thing you gotta have a friggin Dana 60 to make it to the grocery store. Thats bullsh*t. I see this mind set alot here in Frankfort, KY. I can't stand it when these guys buy freakin 1 ton dodge turbo cummins desiels because they gotta have it to drive across a damn field. Alot of guys take these z-28's and serious modify them and run just fine. Infact if its a 2001, out of a Z-28, i believe its a 8 and something inch rear end, not the 7-5/8ths. Think about it, the car has 300 hp right now. They've been making these rear ends for ever. They've probably made 20 million of them. They are the same stump as used in the S-series trucks. How many camaros and s-series have you seen sittin in the garage cuz the ring and pinion is out of them? Yeah, a 12 bolt is a popular mod for the camaro, but thats for the guys like me. That like lots of horsepower and love to spin tires. Also keep in mind that V-8 swap is a popular thing in S-10's and most of the time the original rear end is kept in the truck. You have to make the decision yourself. If your not gonna thrash the **** out of your truck then it will hold up fine. It'll be a good piece because its cheap and will have parts easily available. Its all how your gonna use your truck. If your worried about the bolt patterns, you can get a wheel with both patterns on it to either use as your wheels or to keep as a spare.

As for the 2001, it still has the 7.5" diff. Never changed from '93-'02 with exception of the location of the reluctor wheels for the ABS. I think you shouldn't waste your time with it. Find a regular 10 bolt from an older Camaro or something like that.

Add a little more weight, a little more power, and a lot more tire and POW! The newer ones are a little better, but darn near everybody who ever put 100,000 miles on an S-10 Blazer put a rear end in it (and a rebuilt 2.8...) The engineering of the Camaro 10 bolt is insufficient for a truck. Just build the truck 12 bolt IMO. You can usually find good gears (3.73) real easy, add a posi and a disc brake conversion kit. Aftermarket forged axles are less than $300 a set these days. Yes, it all adds up to a lot of money but in the long run it's cheaper than building and then having to rebuild the Camaro axle.
