i`ve never decoded one where it says 4 bolt or not. i think you have to drop the pan to be sure. the #`s should be the same for both.

You cant really go by casting numbers on the main bolt count Ive had a 3970014 4 bolt block and still have a few 3970010 2 bolts Both are numbers many people swear to be 2 bolt and 4 bolt 010 being the four bolt.

I fully agree with this comment. I have in my possession two 350s. Both have the same casting number - that being 3970010. One is a 2 bolt and the other is a 4 bolt.

I still don't know why so many people get hung up over 2 bolt verses 4 bolt blocks. Unless you rev it over 7 grand all the time either will last a good long time.

Yeah i know right ... Its beyond me Alot of high performance engines came out in a 2 bolt main configuration. They seemed to hold up just fine.

Information on engines can be looked up a number of ways, but some of the engines you need to check everything available.

The suffix code seems to work pretty well on the older engines but on the newer engines it does not work that well. (Note bigunde's post of the CMJ suffix where it could be a 350 or a 305 engine).

Using the suffix code, block casting number and the date code will help but I don't know of anyway that codes will absolutely tell you whether you have a four bolt or not. If you want to know about the four bolt, pulling the pan is the only sure way.

My book list it as a '74 - '76 police package 350. HP is not listed. Max net hp for a 350 in this era was about 250 for the Vette engines (245 for Camaro), and most of the car engines had 155 - 165 net hp. I am not sure what kind of tune they offered in the police package.
