TX crew - authentic year matching plates?

Who runs them?

Whats your registration? Classic? Antique?

Any hassles?

F&R plate, or just rear?

Im ebaying and the nicest plates I found are $135 shipped. (ouch, thats almost a windshield!)

Just want to hear some war stories with TXDOT before I make this investment - any issues getting yours swapmeet/ebay plates legal?

Re: TX crew - authentic year matching plates?

I bought a pair of mint 1970 Ohio Truck plates for about $40 last fall at a VW show. I plan on using them next summer. I don't know much about plates...is $100 high or $50 low? I just thought it would be neat to have the same year plates as my truck.

Re: TX crew - authentic year matching plates?

Howdy,
Grew up in San Angelo, living in NC now so that doesn't help with TXDOT issues. As to cost, I found a mint, (still in the paper sleeve), '72 NC plate on Fleabay for $37 after shipping. Does TX still run front AND back or just back? If you run both then mine would have added up to $74 for both. Just food for thought.
Still miss "West-by-God-Texas!"

Regards,
Paul

Re: TX crew - authentic year matching plates?

Texas still runs front and back. You will have to get the plates approved at you local dmv.

Re: TX crew - authentic year matching plates?

I found some for my '72 from here:

http://www.txlicenseplates.com/1970s...70s_truck.html

No problems, in great shape, came in a few days,

Registered as a classic, not antique.

Biggest hassles were the blank looks from the lady at the TXDOT office when I told her she needed to inspect my plates. I'd def. bring some printouts from the TXDOT website to show them just in case (her supervisor knew the deal, just took awhile to get her over there).

2nd hassle was waiting in line at the Tax office to get a new registration sticker to match the new (old) plates.

BUT it was all worth it to get those smooth old plates on the rig and get rid of that damn space shuttle/ guy on horse/ horizon trainwreck that was there before

Re: TX crew - authentic year matching plates?

I run '69 plates on front and rear. Mine is titled regularly, because I did not want any restrictions with regards to yearly miles or otherwise. Make sure that you are getting "truck" plates. Tx DMV requires that vintage plates match the vehicle. I bought mine from a dealer on Ebay for about $50 plus shipping. NOS with the paper in between, that advertised for the Texas Prison Rodeo (still planning on framing the paper).

Thumbs up Re: TX crew - authentic year matching plates?

I had been looking for 71' plates for a long time and could only come up with plates for $150.00, too high. However, thanks to your thread I found some 71' from your same dealer and offered $50.00. Bingo!! Plates are in the mail! Thanks for the heads-up!

Cheers,
David

Awesome! I got mine for 110 shipped. More than I wanted to pay, really, but they were in REALLY nice shape. And I really like the white/blue plates of the 1970.

Re: TX crew - authentic year matching plates?

I got a set of '71 truck plates and registered my 71 as a classic. I'd shop around forplates if you aren;t in a hurry. I'm pretty-sure I didn't pay more than $15 for front and rears. I had no hassles at DMV.

A couple of post up-someone mentioned matching registration sticker? What's that about (I've only had the plates for a year & haven't renewed)

Is there something special i should ask for?

You have to register your truck as a 'classic' to run old plates. There are no mileage or other restrictions on classic registration (as there is on antique registration); it just costs you $15 extra, the same as having a vanity plate. Essentially what you're doing is paying TXDOT to have a 'Classic Truck' plate but you're substituting your old plates for the ones they would send you.

Here's the process:

1) Get the old plates

2) Print out this form http://www.dot.state.tx.us/txdotefor...vletConfig.xml

DON'T send it to Austin, yet

3) Take your plates to a TXDOT office and have them inspected. They will make a photocopy of the plates and sign it or initial it or something and I think they type some stuff on your vehicle file in the computer noting that they were inspected (maybe not, I can't remember that too well).

4) Send the filled out form and the photocopy of the plates from the TXDOT office and your $15 fee to Austin

5) Wait a few weeks

6) They will mail you back a letter that instructs you to go to the tax office, surrender your current registration sticker, and get a new one. They print the new reg stickers on the spot. I think I had to pay for a prorated new registration, and I DID have to give them my old sticker.

7) Put your new registration sticker and cool old plates on and drink a beer 'cause it was a pain in the a$$ but now your truck looks sweeter.

Note that the TX registration stickers has your plate # on it. I think you would get busted if they didn't match and you got pulled over (or hit with one of those sneaky scanners they use here in Houston).

Re: TX crew - authentic year matching plates?

What do you know- my registration sticker matches my '71 plates. I guess I totally blanked on that part of the process.

I've inhaled too many small block fumes. I really don;t remember getting the sticker at the DMV....

Thanks for the tip-

I heard from a plate dealer at a swap meet that if you get the year of manufacture dealer plate you will only be required to run 1 plate on the rear.
That doesn't mean that your local law enforcement would be aware of this and you may be inconvenienced because of this.
If it is legal then get it in writing and carry it with you.
I am unsure if they made Truck specific Dealer plates I think that Dealer plates covered cars and trucks. I could be wrong on this.
I know that you can get farm truck plates and use those.

Re: TX crew - authentic year matching plates?

Just a little to add - IN TX, if you run the regular, ugly Antique Vehicle plate you will only be issued a rear plate.

I don't know why they do this...

Re: TX crew - authentic year matching plates?

i have 11 sets of consecutive numbered mint unused 1972 texas plates. they don't say truck, but can still be used. i'd take $50 a pair for them. you can buy one set or all.

I'd check with your local tax assessors office and see if they are OK with it.

BTW, im all done - pics coming later.

Cost was $200 (including tax from vehicle purchase)

The employee I got knew EXACTLY what I was doing and how to do it, and had done it before. But I guess there are a lot of classic rods in Austin, soo... YMMV
