VIN vs, motor type
Hi!
Any one thay can help me? How can I figure out what engine type was fitted originaly in a C10? I was thinking of exporting a 63-66 with V8, but need to be sure of that being originaly installed. There are no requirement for matching numbers but cylinder count and cubic inch need to be original! Thanks! /2mas |

Re: VIN vs, motor type
As far as I know there is no way to determine what motor a truck came with. It may have a build sheet on the glove box door stating it but they are only on 66 and usually gone.

Re: VIN vs, motor type
if you are lucky there is stil a build sheet under/behind your seat. otherwise there is no way to tell.
the v8 does use a shorter gas pedal lever on the firewall side, that might be your only clue. since there is no way to tell for sure, all 63-66's were available with a 283 3bbl , if it was ordered with a v8. some were special ordered with a 327, but every "327" 60-66 I have bought , or looked at turned out to be a 283. you can have the seller send you the #'s from the front right pad in front of the cylinder head, that will give you the year and type of engine... for example I looked up the "327" in my 66 and it turned out to be a 66 283 2bbl california smog motor, which was further proved by the still original pass. side exhaust manifold that had the air ports.

Re: VIN vs, motor type
jonz - I always thought the 327 was only an option in 66? Was it available in other years?

Re: VIN vs, motor type
the vin does not tell what engine came in these trucks.as stated above the best way to know if the engine is the correct year is to run the numbers on it.although you might have a 66 engine in a 66 truck it still might not be the original engine for that truck.there is really no way to tell if it came in a particular truck or not even if you have the build sheet the engine could have come out of a parts truck that is the same year.the 1966 trucks were the only year with option label attached to inside of glove box and these can be reproduced to state that a truck had options that it did not originally have.i would say that if you have a 66 engine in a 1966 truck that would be as close to original that you could get in these trucks.good luck.

Re: VIN vs, motor type
My 66 gmc has the engine hp and model, along with where it was built (pontiac Michigan) along with the GVW. Here is a picture of that tag......the flash is over the Pontiac MI build plant info:
http://kieth.smugmug.com/Trucks/66-G...749_AVav7-A-LB I have another 65 gmc it has the same tag (drivers side next to vent) I have a 65 C10 (1 owner original truck) It has a simalar tag but it looked to show more detail I will get my bifocals and look at it again and take my camera out and take a picture of it. Re: VIN vs, motor type
Ok this should end the debate about how the cabs were marked in 1965 and what engine was available:
This data tag off of my 1 owner 65 C10 show 283 and the 327 were available in a half ton truck...... http://kieth.smugmug.com/Trucks/65-C..._WgDsDZx-X2-LB |
