Steering wheel removal problems - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I know this has been asked a million times, and I found some threads concerning the removal of the steering wheel, but nothing is pulling this thing off. I know some said theirs came off easily just by pulling with their hands, other used a puller.

I have the nut backed off, and I've been pulling, beating with rubber mallet, used a wheel puller, but this thing won't budge. I even cut the steering wheel to see if I could see something I'm missing. It's just a matter of removing the large center nut, and sliding the wheel off, right? I thought about applying some heat, but I know there are some plastic parts in there. I almost to the point of looking for another column because I'm also having shifting problems

Mine was a female dog too. Ended up using my impact on the puller and it popped right off.

Try soaking it with a good penetrating fluid overnight, it might just be rusted in place.

It would also help by using a washers so the bolt isn't pulling past the fork, using a short bolt and pulling straight up. You need to a dead blow hammer or a pall pein hammer and smack the center bolt ( don't have to hit it very hard ) .

It will come loose.

Dang, that is the color steering wheel I have been looking for high and low. What, when it does come off are you replacing it with?
Other than a few crazy looking bolts there I don't see any reason it should not come off.

Watched my dad remove many a steering wheel with a couple 4lb hammers... back off the nut (kinda like you've got it). Hold one hammer against the nut... and apply a swift blow with the other... usually fell off in his lap.

same principle applies to steering arms...

I've never seen one that seems as stubborn as what you're working with. I agree with the previous statement about using washers to keep the heads of the bolts from pulling through.

I soaked it with some PB blaster and will give it another shot tomorrow. I did break off my 4 way flasher button though. Hopefully that's an easy fix.

I haven't found a new replacement wheel yet, but I do have a 67 Chevelle and a 68 Impala wheel. Will either of those fit?
