Re: Dana 70 4X4 Axle Set..............

That front is junk. It's closed knuckle drum brake. A 60 front is stronger than that. Even if it was the open knuckle, disc brake, it isn't really THAT much stronger than a 60. It will have a bigger ring gear and the 35 spline outers. There is one of the axles in a yard here, and that is the reason it still sits there, or I would have got it by now.....The rear tho is fine, looks like it has a Powrlok...

The Dana60/70 combo came in the M41s.They`re tougher than what`s under most every 4wd.Just not the best. The Dana70 is one tough rear end that`s hard to beat.

b454rat is correct. dana 70 front is going to be heavier...drum brakes just suck...locker options are limited..gear options are limited...prices for replacement parts are going to be rediculous. you could get 60 hubs and stuff and swap it to a disk brake set up but then youve just got an expensive cobbled dana 60. dana 70 rears can be broken...i busted the pinion yoke clean off and shot pieces of the locker through the cover.

While I agree with part of what you are saying, there are plenty of locker and gearing selections for Dana 70's. Anywhere from 3.07's up to 7.17. If you need more (or less) gearing than that, you need another type of axle (and perhaps some mental help ) Detroit locker, lock-right, power lock posi, arb air locker, and im sure there are more.

If you think some brake parts are tough to find for Chevy's, those front brakes will be just as much of a nightmare, not to mention if you have to replace kingpins or any other parts.

If you had a 60 front with a bent housing or if your eating front ring and pinions then it would be nice to have the 70 front to weld your 60 inner c's on. After all, the front 70 does look like its got a detroit in it.

Good eyes, I didn't bother to check cuz the pic was so dark. With it lightened up, sure does look like one to me.

isnt the 14 bolt pretty much the same as a dana 70 rear, except the 14 bolt has a larger pinion shaft/bearing?

Welllll....I wouldn`t say that. You know they aren`t even made by the same companies and the design surely varies.

special- yup, ones a GM and ones Dana, i guess i should have worded that better

i read somewhere one time that strength for strength, and most of the specs (axle tube dimensions, axle shaft diminsions, stock brake sizes, that kinda thing) are pretty well equal between the 2, but the 14 bolt 10.5 FF had a bigger pinion. i think it may have been peterson's 4 wheel and off road maybe?

Re: Dana 70 4X4 Axle Set..............

Well.....Here in the pullin' world, I've heard many Ford guys admit that the 14-bolt was tougher than the D70. I've also heard, like in previous posts you've probably seen that the H 072 is just as tough or tougher than the 14-bolt. We have guys in our Pullin' association pushing 800+ HP through 14-bolts every weekend at 7500+RPM and they live all day long!!!!!!! The D60 is not even considered for pullin' at this level....

GET A 14-BOLT...THEY'RE DIRT CHEAP, AND STRONG!!!!

D60 front....the aftermarket has made them VERY STOUT...

The real difference is the 14 bolt's 3rd pinion bearing. The D70 only has 2, further apart. The Eaton also has 3. It makes it harder for the pinion gear to "walk" away from the ring gear under load.

Oh, and read Petersen's 4WOR with a grain of salt. They print up a LOT of mistakes.

Re: Dana 70 4X4 Axle Set..............

so does the LD 14bolt SF 6 lug have 3 pinion bearings too?

on the "walking away from the ring gear" thing, i bet thats what happened to the D70 4:10 locker i have in the field with no ring gear teeth left is that even worth rebuilding?

you both have a very good point about the reading with a grain of salt

Hi Blue, the SF14 is a standard c-clip axle without the removable pinion support on the front.
