Partial shortbed??

I have issues with both long beds and short beds in terms of their proportions. On the one hand I have always likes longer, smoother vehicles but my eye seems to catch something it doesn't like when I look at my long bed.

Short beds, while looking great in pictures, seem to be very short, stubby trucks in person to me. It looks like it has the same overall length as a ford ranger compared to my long bed.

Then I was thinking, why not remove 6-8 inches of a long bed where the eye catches something funny. I did this real quick in paint -thanks to Jcentsr6 for his truck pic.

Tell me what you think. Anybody with photoshop can have at it.

Re: Partial shortbed??

The second one looks good but I think you really need to see the pickup as a whole before you can be sure. The top box looks longer than normal but that could be because it is a picture of just a box.

Re: Partial shortbed??

I agree, though the top pic is kinda what my eye catches when I look at my lwb. I guess I would like the length of the truck to be more full size muscle than compact muscle like a 65 chevelle vs a 67 nova in terms of overall size.

Re: Partial shortbed??

i think youd need to cut a bit off both ends, before the wheel well and after, otherwise it'd look odd. but why not, go for it. i definitely wouldnt shorten my frame just for a few inches though.

Re: Partial shortbed??

I am pretty much trying to copy the short bed proportions (bed in front of the wheel centerline, bed behind the wheel centerline), but in long bed form.

If that makes any sense??? Maybe I smelled something funny at work today or something.

Re: Partial shortbed??

yeah I think its so subtle that it's one of those things your not supposed to pick up, all you really pick up is that it looks good.

I might actually do it on my truck, it would solve my dilemma and I need a new drive shaft anyway since I'm throwing a 4 spd in. On top of that by bed sides need some patching so what the hell right.

Re: Partial shortbed??

I think these truck are perfect as they are in both long and short bed.I think the second picture makes it too stubby. It`s not as graceful as the General`s work.

Re: Partial shortbed??

I shortend it one foot, that way if I didn't like it I could shotend the back 8'' and I would have a short box. The box minus a foot is about the same lengh as the cab.

Re: Partial shortbed??

I agree with the statement that short beds look kind of stubby and long beds look a little too long.

The second pic in the last set is about right for looking proportionate. The bed looks more balanced and does not have the "wagon" look.

Either way, I would hesitate to cut up a good frame and bed on these trucks. Now on a beater I might do it, though.

I personall like the look of having the bed in front of the wheels short and behind the wheels long.

Re: Partial shortbed??

Well I did some crude scaling and proportions to come up with about 8.5 inches of bed removal to make the truck look like the pic I modified.

That seems about right after I mocked it up with a piece of cardboard on my truck.

What are we going to call this - '70 Chevy short long wide?

Re: Partial shortbed??

I'm with ya on this too. It's all about symetrics. The panel in front of the tire should be approximately the same length as the panel behind the tire. I think it would be a cool mod. Fitting the trim oughta be fun.

I can`t believe you guys think these trucks aren`t symetrical.Do what you want with your truck. But,aren`t all y`all into these trucks because they are one of the best designs ever?I just don`t get it.

"The panel in front of the tire 'should' be approximately the same length as the panel behind the tire?"...Says who? That`s your opinion, not what it 'should' be.The designers at GM were well schooled on symetrics...obviously.My keen eye for aesthetics must beg to differ.Have fun,it`s your trucks.
