73-87 Chevy truck fuel tanks sizes and swaps??

Gonna do work on an 81 2wd shortbed. I will be upgrading to a newer (87 I guess..) fuel tank with the baffling for fuel injection. Will do pump and matching sending unit.

Is there an easy way to identify what size tank the truck has now and am I right to assume that the same size newer tank will bolt back into the same brackets?? Should I just order up new brackets/ straps at the same time and do the whole job?

Who has done what when fuel injection one of these with a newer tank swap??

Thanks guys

Shortbed has a 16 gallon tank. Uses the same straps too.

Re: 73-87 Chevy truck fuel tanks sizes and swaps??

My 73 C20 had a dealership added driver's side tank with a switch to change tanks.
Not a vey good set-up, I must say.

We swapped it out for a later model Factory GM tank unit set up.

However, I keep experiencing Gas Gauge issues where the gauge wont read either tank correctly, AND... I am experiencing pressure build up.

I prefer the early style vacuum pull with the floor valve tank switching.

Just something to consider to address when you do your swap.
