Did these trucks originally have a fuel filter? Mine has the original steel gas lines and no filter. Did they have an undercab filter like some of the other trucks? I would hate to cut the lines to put in a filter. It's a 1970 with a 250.

It was probably inside a fitting on the carb where the fuel line scres into. Maybe a brass or paper element.

The only filters these trucks had from the factory was in the inlet of the carb, very small filter. There also is a sock style filter on the fuel pickup in the tank.

Some people take the small filter out of the carb and put a larger filter between the fuel pump and the carb.

It is not recommended to put a filter between the tank and the pump because it could cause vapor lock problems.

Thanks, just wondered. Guess that 1 year old fuel pump is gone. All the Ford trucks and vans had an undercab filter. I have a bad hip and have trouble crawling under anymore.

Why do you say the fuel pump is gone? Im having an issue with mine in that it gets vapor lock. Not because of the fuel filter but because its so damn hot outside (100 plus today) combined with the intake temps Im boiling the gas inside the carb causing a vapor lock in my line from the pump to the carb. Im going to pick up a carb spacer tomorrow and that should finally solve my problem. I have a stock intake and a rochester carb. It has a small plastic spacer but its like only a 1/4 inch thick.

Have you checked the two rubber hoses in the fuel line? There is one under the cab and one at the suction side of the fuel pump. Mine had cracks in them causing the fuel pump to suck air.

Before you replace your fuel pump you should disconnet the suction hose and blow a little air pressure back into the tank to make sure it is not a plugged line. First take the gas cap off before applying air pressure.

I'll try that if it ever cools off. It's 103F right now with 120F heat index.

I thought it was hot here in flatlands of Southeast Missouri, but it is cool compared to where you are.

The humidity here is unbearable though.

Before you unbolt that pump.....

Disconnect the inlet line, hold your finger over the port, and have a helper crank the engine. Do you feel any suction? If yes, don't replace the pump unless you have just plain run out of other things to do with your money.

Anybody try an electric fuel pump with a fuel filter on it with an otherwise stock truck (meaning, tank in the cab, no FI, etc.)?

Right now, I'm replacing the fuel delivery system from a newly and properly cleaned (boiled out) up to the carb.
And, I'm always wondering about even NEW fuel pumps.

I'll try the "suck test", raycow offered back in 2010 (thanks for that, BTW), but wouldn't it be nice just to block it off and call it "done"....
....Time, and technology, marches on, no?
