HEI install question (wiring)
I know this has been somewhat covered, but it's a bit confusing to me.
Doing the swap to HEI distributor slowly. I was wondering if I could do the wiring like I have in the diagram. Remove the 2 wires from the old coil then run new 12 gauge wire from the run terminal of the starter solenoid (where the yellow wire was connected) to the Bat+ terminal on the HEI. It seems to me that since the battery is connected directly to the solenoid with large cable that this would be a good source of 12 volt supply or would I be possibly overloading the wiring inside the solenoid itself. Any thoughts?

The "R" on the solenoid terminal doesn't stand for Run. That terminal gets a full 12 volts only when the engine is cranking and is used to bypass the resistance wire used with the stock points system. The resistance wire is the one marked "20-P" on the diagram. You will need to feed your HEI from some point which is hot with the ignition switch on and does not go through the resistance wire.

I just run the pink wire from the ignition switch to the HEI.

You`ll haqve two leads on the HEi one is for Tach, it should be marked on the dizzy cap...

I just finished putting an HEI on my 230 six banger this afternoon. Disconnected the yellow wire off the solenoid and the wire off the coil and taped them up real good. Ran a new 12 gauge wire with a 30 amp in line fuse and connected it to an unfused connection on my fuse panel. Fired right up. Set the timing at 12 degrees and went for a spin around the block. Took about 2 hours.

Every time I have done the swap I usually go to the fuse box and look for an alternated (12 volts with the ignition in the "on" position only) power source that is not shared with any other devices. Once I find an empty lead I just run a wire from that to the power terminal on the HEI. I don't know much yet about our generation trucks, but there should be a good place to get a good alternated power source at or near the fuse box. I've always been told to keep the power lead to the HEI as it's own source, something about attaching other leads causing electrical feedback. I don't know how true this is, but I have always followed this advice and I have never had an issue with any HEI system I instal (and I use them on everything).

Ran mine for over 4 years off of the pink wire from the ignition switch. I usually cut the wire off of a donor car/truck long enough to reach.

I should be able to figure it out. I have a few things to do before I stick the HEI in though (switching back to original mechanical oil pressure gauge). I need to put blinders on though. I see lots of stuff I need to do (you know the since I'm doing this I might as well do that syndrome).

Looking at your diagram, I would say the pink wire IS the resistance wire.

Yes. I'm finally done with the HEI swap. Thanks for all your help guys. I thought I was never going to finish it. Between my daughter needing me so she could beat me on the Wii, my wife and her to do lists, my aching back and that syndrome I talked about earlier, it wasn't easy. I also ended up switching back to the stock gauges and senders, changing from an SP2P intake to a performer and re-routing some of the electical under the hood. Still have a little dialing in to do but it's back on the road again.
