Rust pictures. How to repair?

I finally picked up my 1971. I have to say its very low on rust from what i have seen. Here are pics of the worst cases of the rust. Would just like some info on fixing it correctly. When im done painting the car, i dont want to see rust bubbling up 6 years later. Truck will be garaged 95% of the time.

off to pics.

This is the drivers left floor board. It doesnt go all the way through.

This is the drivers side rocker. Only area rusted through.

This is the passenger side floor board. Worst of it. Best way to fix permanetly?

This is the passenger side door. Its nto rusted through, but do i just grind it down, por15, paint and im done? Or do i cut it out.

All advice is apprectiated thank you.

Re: Rust pictures. How to repair?

Yeeoww, nasty lookng stuff at extreme close up. Looks like you took the pics with a microscope.

Hard to see the pics since they're extremely big on my screen, but I would say that the only thing you can do is to cut out the bad and replace with new panels.

Looks like a mig welder and cutoff wheel will be needed. I'm in the process of doing the same on mine...

Re: Rust pictures. How to repair?

Yeah, pics are way too close to get a good idea of whats going on. But, from what I can tell, it looks like everything that needs fixed has a replacement panel available. If you can, get some pics a little farther back so we can see the area the rust is in.

Re: Rust pictures. How to repair?

It looks like water is getting in the cab from your first pic (the kick panel rust appears to be wet?) The most important thing to do FIRST is determine where the leak is, fix the leak, then fix the rust

It may be coming in from under your dash, I think that's what the last pic is of?

Re: Rust pictures. How to repair?

This is kinda like one of those close up pics where you have to guess what it is... Back up a little and give us another chance.

I don't think por-15 will do it for you though, there's gonna be some cutting and welding going on to do it right...

Good luck, Rg

I will take pics further away.. When i drove the vehicle home sunday it was raining and all the sudden water was coming in from under the dash on the passenger side and more water on the drivers side kickpanel. Im thinking its coming from the cowl area somewhere.

I will get more pics at a decent distance and then go from there.

Re: Rust pictures. How to repair?

Look for an old antenna hole on the passenger side. That's usually the culprit there. Driverside, could be the dash leaking (cowl) or the windshield seal.

Re: Rust pictures. How to repair?

When I got my 67. it had so much fine dirt built up in the vent, water could just come in the cowl vent opening and run into the cab. I had to dig the packed in dirt out with a screw driver so that I could get water to drain out of the drain hole (rust hole?) in the bottom of the vent.

I looked inside teh cowl and there is a TON of **** build up in there. Im basically starting with the rear of the truck and building forward, so im not to worried about that yet.. I will tackle that when i start working on the cab area and the floor boards.

I need to find a sandblaster near by so i can get my rallys blasted and repainted in time for the longhorn WA meet. ahaha.

Re: Rust pictures. How to repair?

sandblasting will tel you how bad the rust really is instead of how bad it looks
you will be suprised at how thin the metal is in some areas

Re: Rust pictures. How to repair?

You do need to remove the cowl panel and clean the area out.The rust will continue as long as the area holds water. Its about 6-7 screws and 4-6 bolts to remove it.Many of the vendors sell screens to put under the cowl panel to prevent the buildup of debris in there.

i would think in your area it would be easier faster and cheaper to replace the cab. that one looks like it came from here

I will get some other pics so you can see how small the rust areas are. I just want to know if you have rust do you have to cut it out to be done 100% with it?? I just want to do this right and once.
