67 C-10 project.

Greetings! I'm a new member of your fine site! I just traded a shotgun, guitar and amplifier for a 67 truck, which i was able to drive 100 miles home! I love your site, and the folks on here have built some beautiful trucks ! Very inspirational. I hope to learn lots and i'd love to share the experience with pics and stuff. i was looking for something to fix up and i've always loved the old trucks. I wanted to get a 66 since that was the year i was born in, and i've kind of been a ford guy. but the 66 fords are butt ugly! and the 66 and older chevy's are okay but i really like the look of the 67-72 chevy's! So 67 is close enough! i looked on e-bay and craigslist for weeks and finally saw an add through that had this truck and said it was all original, everything worked, and it was rust free! dream come true! was asking 1500, for it, then it came down to 1000, and i sent him a message and asked if he was intrested in taking any trades. anyways, finally we agreed to the trade and i drove to Independence KS to see the truck. it was a little rougher than i'd hoped but it ran and the price was right! So anyways i made it home, and then found your web site and have been reading lots and looking over all the builds that have happened etc. I've learned more already! So far i've learned the kid i traded with was not the most honest kid in the world i guess , turns out the truck has some pretty bad rust spots, the engine is not the original one. it has a inline 6 and according to the serial number came with a v8. and the drivers door and left front fender aren't original. it's in serious need of some TLC! it had i don't know how many years worth of dirt inside, a giant burlap sack stuffed ina rust hole a football would pass through, 2 pairs of underwear and 3 socks under the seat. lots of dangling wires, and other signs of neglect and abuse. oh! and 1 maybe two working brakes...it was a scary ride home! i'm not exactly sure of the plans for it yet, but i know i don't want a show truck. i'd like it mechanicaly sound, and rat roddish in appearence i guess. i do know that i'd like to swap the front end with something that has disc brakes. i'd like to add power steering. and i think i'd like to put a v-8 back in it. and i know i want to fix all of the rust i think, at least the majority of it. anyways, thanks in advance to everybody! I'm sure i'll have lots of questions! i'm really excited to do this and i'm glad to meet you all! sorry for the long intro.

Jason

Re: 67 C-10 project.

thanks! i'm excited to start working on it and getting it cleaned up. my plan is to just do it a little bit at a time and keep it driveable. the first thing i need to do is get the brakes working. when i looked underneath it last night to see if i had a 12 bolt rear end i noticed that the rear drivers side wheel is leaking brake fuid pretty bad. so i'll start with that.
Jason

to update where the truck is at as of 3/5/2011

have installed a 73-74 front end with HD discs
have purchased a 79 12 bolt rear end
aquired 5 15 x8 ralley wheels and two new tires so far
purchased a new side door mirror
aquired a good running 350 motor
aquired a 67 327 motor to rebuild someday
got a good straight hood
got a folding 67 bench seat
picked up a 67 gauge cluster with more gauges
currently have the cab and front clip off to start getting the rust repaired

still need to do:
replace all of the rusty areas
install power steering gear box
get the brakes figured out
get the bed off
install 79 rear end
install motor
get new wiring harness
replace drivers front fender
replace front and back windows
all new rubber and weather stripping
lots more i'm sure...

as of 3/23/2011

purchased a donor 67 c20
so far it has good glass - windshield and small rear window
good left fender
good tailgate and bed
has a windshield washer bottle
has a good tranny mount
has sun visors - drivers and passengers
has a front sway bar - not sure if i can use it on mine.
has a cool horn button!
more i'm sure....

busy sandblasting things and cleaning it up...

Re: 67 C-10 project.

Maybe that was a typo.....it was supposed to read "Free Rust".....

Either way, good trade. Just put in some time on it and you will be very happy with it in the end.

Re: 67 C-10 project.

i agree, i looked up the serial number for it and it had come from the factory with a v-8, but it now has a straight 6 in it. is there a way to tell what v-8 it came with? i would guess a 283 , maybe a 327 i guess. i'm thinking a 350 would be most affordable v-8 option. i have some engine and interior pics, i just got to get them off my phone...there's things on the 6 too that i have lots of issues with and i even have no clue what a few of them are...lol

Re: 67 C-10 project.

oh i hear that! I have a two car garage, but it's all set up for wood working. I'm a cabinet builder by trade. i took some pictures tonight and i'm waitng to get on my computer to load them. i have a question: if i was to buy a 79 chevy truck with a 350/350 i think that i'd be able to use the parts from it to move to my 67. is that right? i want to switch to a v-8, i want power steering and disc brakes, just not sure if i want to go to the auto trans. the truck came with a 4 speed manual that is still in it. seems like i read the bel howsing are the same so i'm hoping i could bolt the 350 back into it with no problems. i can get a used good running 79 on CL for 750 bucks.
Thoughts?

Re: 67 C-10 project.

Nice truck!

Id run er down to the local car wash with like 10 bucks in change and a couple cans of degreaser or something and wash that motor, go thru and service it (belts, hoses, filters, oil, plugs). You've got the right idea, a little at a time and keep it driveable).

I wouldnt make any changes right away, get it running/driving safely and see what you think.

Re: 67 C-10 project.

i agree with old blue get acouple grocery bags and put them over the distibutor and makeit so no water gets in the carb or the distributor and wash it and you could also wash the truck with the power washer and hope some of the new paint gets off so you have the original paint

Re: 67 C-10 project.

thanks! i fixed my 4" grinder cord tonight so it works again, now if i can find the wire brush for it, i think i'll start grinding off some of the rust and old bondo and crud, and get it sealed up. the front bumper is pretty dented up but I'm thinking about trying to straiten it all out with some wood and a sledge hammer. that should be fun!!

p.s.. ever since i got this truck and found this website...my sleep pattern is all screwed up!

Re: 67 C-10 project.

yeah, once i can get the bumper off, i'll look at getting the front grill off as well. the trim looks to be in pretty good condition. i think i'll just shine it up a little with some fine steel wool. i can see the original white paint still so i do think i will go back to original white. where does the green paint stop at?

Re: 67 C-10 project.

well, i guess when it rains it pours. i found another motor for my truck and it is too good of a deal too pass up! An original , never rebuilt 67 327 motor that came out of a long bed C-10 truck 10 years ago. it was running when it was pulled and it has been sitting in the PO garage under a tarp for 10 collecting dust. He said that he was saving it for a special project, but it never happened. it has all of the original parts i believe and is complete as well he thinks. about 90 k miles on it, ran strong, but burned a little oil when he pulled it. $375 dollars for it!
