Outside Mirror Placement....HELP

I have a pair of new mirrors to go on my new doors. I have one pictured here. I have paged through that ever popular, (but sometimes not so complete, but lucky we have one at all), Red Covered 1967-72 Chev/GMC Truck Assembly Manual and have not been able to find the dimensions on the correct palacement of these mirrors. Thay have the hole sizes illustrated, but no reference as to where to place them on the door. I believe they are placed somewhere on that 2.25 inch wide flat section below the window, but I don't know how far back from either edge. Any Answers? I have attached a picture of the mirror, a picture from the aforementioned book, and a picture of the truck I am working on just to make the rather boring question a little bit more interesting. Thanks in advance for your time to read this and your help.

Looking at the pictures I have seen they look to be directly in the middle of that flat area you spoke of.

But you have to have doors to install them.

Mirror location paper work

I have mounted my left mirror, (same mirrors) on my 71 C10 as per the location paper work supplied with the mirror. It was perfect. I have not mounted my right mirror as I am not satisfied with the location totally as I have a 95 Chev seat and have just not tried again. Tough to do by yourself. I will look for the paperwork tonight for both sides and try to send it to you tomorrow. The picture on my profile is the truck before I mounted the mirror.
Make sure you get it right as the guy who mounted them on my 72 Blazer before me did not get the right hand side correct and I am not happy about having to change it.

I noticed your screenname "72 Skytop". Is that as in a 72' Nova with the Skytop option?

Nope on the Nova. That is a 1972 Hurst/Olds with an electric sunroof. One of 629 Hurst/Olds's made that year total. Only 220 with the sunroof, 130 convertibles and the rest hardtops. Thanks for the interest.

See I KNEW there was much more to mounting those mirrors....One person even has concluded that one side was mounted a little further forwards to compensate for the vent window....

one mirror is supposed to be further back

You are correct that one mirror is placed differently than the other.
I think the paper work I have gives measurements from the edge of the door and from the bottom of the window. It is too easy. I still had someone hold it for me.
I will locate it and send it so don't go drilling just yet.

The measurements I gave on that thread were compared to 3 different sets of doors and all matched. I pulled the measurements from my 71' Burb, compared them to the extra doors for my 72 Burb, to the doors that are on my 72' Burb and also to the doors on my 72' Cheyenne Super so you are good to go with them.

That sounds like a neat Olds... Post some pics sometime if you get around to it.

The reason I asked was Chevy had a "Skytop" option for the 72 & 73 Nova's. I have a 73' Skytop SS Nova, factory bench seat car with 48K miles. Not quite sure on the production figures for my car(low for sure), but I do know it's the only 73' SS with that option I've seen since I bought the car in 82'. They did have them also in the Buick Apollo's and the Pontiac Ventura's but I haven't seen one in an Omega

Good Luck!

here's the paper I have

This paperwork was provided by a local parts guy up here and has the same hole dimensions as the others above in the thread. It gives reference measurements from the door edge and door line under the window. Again, I have only done the left one so far and it was perfect. I put masking tape on my door and marked the holes and then got the old lady to hold the mirror in place while I crawled into my seat to check it. If you can't read the measurements get back to me and I can send pdf copies to you by email so the numbers are clearer.

Evidently you can mount them anywhere you want on the doors, at least the previous owners of my truck just kept drilling holes until they had them where they wanted 'em.

One other very important thing I forgot. I don't know if you have them or not but you need to install the backing plates on the inside of the door to support the door skin. If not, it will fubar the door overtime... (rips out the holes for the mirrors...)

VinceY Got it er done.

Thanks for all the extra effort, Vince. This is the info I needed. Thanks also for the reminder to use the backing plates. I have them also and will indeed use them. Just on another note. I got new vent frame assemblies and a local glass company was able to retrieve the original numbers matching glass out of the old ones and put them in the new frames. We just need to try to keep these these trucks as original looking as possible. I am even writing a diary for my sons sake so he will know and understand all this also. Take as many kids as the law allows for a ride in the front seat of your truck. They are the future. Seeya. Post complete. Over and out.
