68 chevy c10 cutting out intermitantly
Hello, I think I'm posting this in the right place. My problem is that my truck will sometimes cut out just like I momentarily turned off and on the key. It always starts right back up immediately and there doesn't seem to be an obvious trigger. It is a 1968 chevrolet c10 with a 250 straight six, three on the tree. I've replaced the points, condenser, cap and rotor, plug wires, and plugs. I tried running a hot wire straight to the coil, and even tried a different battery. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Re: 68 chevy c10 cutting out intermitantly
Does it actually kill the engine or is it more of a misfire?

It will actually kill it if it is idling but if I'm driving it will sputter for a second and then keep running fine. It may do it twice a day or once a month completely unpredictable.

Re: 68 chevy c10 cutting out intermitantly
Sounds to me like you should check your fuel filter. I'd probably go ahead and replace it if you haven't done it in a while. If you've got an original carb, you might check the filter in the carb where the fuel line is connected. If there's junk in it, clean it out.
Oh, and to the forum

Re: 68 chevy c10 cutting out intermitantly
Thanks, I'll try that. I was assuming ignition and forgot all about checking fuel. Sometimes your just too close to the problem and need to get an outside opinion. I appreciate the quick reply. By the way, how can I put a picture of my truck by my name like you have?

No problem. I just happened to be on when you were. Sometimes we get lucky and get immediate help, other times we have to wait for it. The great thing about this forum is, there's always someone willing to help.
As for the avatar under your name... There's a link up at the top of the page on the left that says "User CP" opposite side of the logout link. Click on that. Once the page loads, look on the left side and you'll see a link that says "Edit profile picture". Browse for your pic and upload it.

That's a nice looking truck. You should post some pics here:

I had a similar problem, turned out the ignition switch was shorting out internally.

Re: 68 chevy c10 cutting out intermitantly
I'll check that next. The fuel filter was a little old and I replaced it. I'll give it a few days of driving to see if it still does it. If so I'll try the ignition.

Re: 68 chevy c10 cutting out intermitantly
If it has a newer heater fan motor they draw a lot on high speed and will melt the power connections at the ignition switch. It can cause that problem right up until if fails. I've had two like this.
