Finding VIN # from an old license plate

Here we go with this question again.

License plate was registered to me in 1997 in Tipton County, TN. I haven't called TN DMV yet. Is there a chance they could find the VIN based on a 20 year old plate?

Re: Finding VIN # from an old license plate

Last I looked carfax can run a report with a license plate # and state. Could be something to start with?

I am not sure if it would work out since these trucks do not have current style vin numbers.

Edit: Also not sure it would work with an expired plate.

Re: Finding VIN # from an old license plate

I hear ya. Had some free time at work and I found a form that might work. I'll send TN the $15 to see if they can find anything. Wish I know the VIN, but this might get me the VIN and current owners if still in TN from 20 years ago.

Post the plate and state, there are number of sites people use to look it up.

I don't think states generally keep that info for that long. In CA, once a plate falls out of date, after 5 years w/o renewal, it's taken out of the system. As the others have said try other resources first.
