frame #'s question 67 gmc

I have a 67 gmc frame. frame has 2S231 (the letter S is circled on the stamping) stamped on each frame horn right beside the rad support mount and 3888982 with 11-2 86 underneath on the outside of my frame under the cab on both sides. can anyone decode this for me? i have another 67 gmc frame with only the #'s under the cab on the upper lip of the frame where you cant see them and only under the driver side. why the differences in location? these frame #'s confuse me. Help?

Re: frame #'s question 67 gmc

The cab that was on the frame had vin # CS157OD PC8943A. Guess my question does this cab match the chassis #'s. Cab had lots of work done by a PO so it may have been removed at one time. Rod.

Re: frame #'s question 67 gmc

Is it possible the frame rails wear replaced? There is no VIN where it should be? The numbers sure don't match.

Seems that GMC stamped ID's and mystery numbers PiggyWiggly here and there and, at times, not at all.

Re: frame #'s question 67 gmc

everything is still rivited on the frame and it was dirty enough to tell it hasn't been apart. I will take pic's of the #s next week as the chassis is not here right now. it has no dimple for power steering and is not a 63-66 frame (67 front bumper mounts correctly) so i think that this verifies it is a 67 chassis. the wierd thing is that it has the same #'s on both rails. never seen that before and i believe the vin is a 67 gmc vin. I think that the cab does belong to this frame just uncertain how gmc decodes this stuff.

Re: frame #'s question 67 gmc

Chewy, Your VIN is 1967 GMC for sure. Here is the decode.
C= 2wd
S= 6cyl inline
1= 1/2 ton
57= shortbed
OD= wideside
P= pontiac assy. plant
C= 1967
8943= unit built
A= gvw less than 6000
Sorry I don't know the answer to your frame number question.

Re: frame #'s question 67 gmc

I'm talking about the rails or frame being replaced many years ago as a result of an accident,not a recent restoration or truck build. Like a new replacement frame was used.

Re: frame #'s question 67 gmc

not too sure about that. i brought the truck up to Canada from Michigan and they never mentioned anything bout that at the border cross. does anyone know how to break down the frame #'s. the one on my other truck as a portion of the vin # in it but doesnt have 2 parts or any dashes in it.

Re: frame #'s question 67 gmc

Probably not much help, but my 69 has similar numbers on the sides of the frame rails as well as the partial VIN on the top near the steering gear and under the cab on the left side. Those on the sides differ by one number. The first number appears to be a GM part number and, per normal GM numbering convention, the right side is an even number and the left is odd.

Here ars a couple pics. the right side picture doesn't show the 1 in the number 3935812 even though it's clear as a bell visually.

Re: frame #'s question 67 gmc

your probably right being the longer ones are part #'s on the sides. Mine too are one # off from matching each other. just checked my chassis and these were the only #'s i could find first two being on the driver side and second on the passenger side on the side under the cab and on the side by the rad support mount. there were ablolutely no #s above the steering gear or under the cab and can definately tell that its never been tampered with cause there are marks from when the frame was made by the gear box and its nice and clean under the cab.

Re: frame #'s question 67 gmc

I have had 1 67 and 2 68 Canada made Gmc trucks the frame rails all had no dimple or 4 hole for a power steering box two where a 2x4 the third a 4x4

I found only got the power steering dimple on 69 and up frame rails in my truck collection 67 68 69 70 72

I think numbers matching only is a big issue are you doing the whole truck totally stock down to the original motor ?

I find most of these beast do not have an original motor there driven hard and put away wett

Re: frame #'s question 67 gmc

It does look clean and untampered with in the serial # area. But,if you ever want to check for stampings that may have been ground off,you heat with a torch to red hot and you will see the numbers appear.

Re: frame #'s question 67 gmc

boy would i be unhappy if when i get this chassis done they heated it up to see those numbers. cant see that happening but you never know. after i have it blasted i will take pics of those areas again before powder coat. want to make sure i have this covered just in case i run into problems with this when it comes time to register the truck and they try to say i filled the numbers over or the powder filled them in.
