Differences in Carter Competition 600 and Edelbrock 600
A few years back I bought a new Carter 600 Manual choke, Damned good carb. By the way. Today I got the Edelbrock 600 Manual choke from Longhornman in the mail.
There is absolutely no doubt in my mind, That carter or Edelbrock, Manufactures both of these Carbs. There is little markings that are the same, the casting bosses underneath are the same Etc.Etc. the Rods and springs that make the adjustments on the jets so easy are one in the same, there is even the holes in the bowl casting on the Carter, where the Edelbrock name pop rivets onto. I haven't tried a jet change interchangability yet, But I'd be willing to bet, they will interchange. I have wondered all along when looking at pictures and articles on these carbs if they may be. Well, For myself I'm satisfied. They are !! If you knew this to be fact, would you spend the difference in money from the Carter Competition series manual choke 600 Cfm, to the Edelbrock manual choke 600?? I won't !! Ron |

I have noticed that Carter's are about $30 cheaper....infact the only reason i have an Edelbrock is because the local parts store had one in stock for only $2 more than summit back when i bougth mine

Another thing....isn't the Edelbrock made out of zinc and the Carter made out of allumium??
If so, which is better material for a carb???

I have seen a couple small things that are not the same, if you look at the accelirator pump, I think there are a couple small things there, but the carter I was messing with may have been out dated.
Yes, the jets will swap out. |

The Carter Competition I just removed is model 9635 I believe. Very reliable carb. It's rated at 625 where the Edelbrock 1406 I think is 600. I think mine has WEBER imprinted on the drivers side. AFB stands for Aluminum Four Barrell.

Edelbrock bought the rights to the Carter AFB. I don't think Carter makes them anymore. The Edelbrock is the same carb.
Sweet carbs, those AFB's. I've had mine for 10 years or so without a bit of trouble. BTW, AFB means Aluminum Four Barrel. |

Cat Fuzz is right.... Happened back in the early 80's. A lot of the people that worked in the Carter plant work in my plant now. I'm not even sure there was an Edelbrock carb before that. I know they had intakes but not sure about carbs.

I'm not sure if it's true, but I heard Federal Mogul(who owns Carter) stopped producing carbs. Bad news if the only new AFBs were Edelbrocks. I always prefered Carter. I run a 600 cfm AFB on the 350 in my Jimmy, used to run a 700 Carter on the 454 in my old sub, and am contemplating a manual choke 500 cfm AFB for my next 292 L6 in the orange stepside.
I always figured Edelbrocks were for rich kids who needed a shinier carb under the hood to impress their friends and a big red decal for all the cops to notice. If Carter's gone under, I'll have to reassess my position. In 25 years, have never been able to tune up my own Holley 4160. But the Carter's a piece of cake. If AFB=Aluminum Four Barrel,[and I don't doubt it] what does AVS mean? That's the basis of Edelbrock's new "Thunder" series carbs (they're spreadbores).

An AVS is pretty much like the AFB except the secondarys are adjustable with a spring similar to a Q-jet. They only came from the factory on Mopars, they are not spreadbores. The Carter spreadbores were thermoquads

The AVS is now available through the aftermarket. I saw one somewhere just last week.

The owner's manual should have charts for selecting the proper jets and metering rods. If you don't have the manual, http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive/eps_intro.html has the online manual.
I can't see how a 1406 could be too rich for a 460...mine was too lean for my 350

That is what it means. I used to work for an auto parts distribution center and the Federal Mogul rep told me what it meant. |

Please don't think that way CASEY, That's what this place is all about, or supposed to be anyway.. LEARNING!!!
You may not have to change the jets out. JUST THE METERING RODS. There is 2 small tin "inspection" plates on the top of the carb. one on each side of the horn. Loosen them and turn them until you can pull out a round jobby and a rod. Look at the end of that rod, you will see it has a three step thickness to it.(some do only have two) The thicker the rod the less fuel that goes through the jet. The round jobby, Is what sits in the vacuum port, The amount of vacuum denotes what amount that pulls the rod in and out of the jet. Giving more or less fuel as the engine needs. Very effecient over a holley. Now if, going to the largest thickness on the metering rod doesn't help what your engine needs, then you will have to change jets, That means pulling the top of the carb apart. That's not a hard thing to do either. remove all of the screws on the top portion of the carb, ( some are "STAR" heads) you will have to remove a couple of the linkage rods to get the top off. The jets are sitting in the bottom of the bowl right below the metering rods. Don't loose the "spring" that sits under that round jobby, that spring preloads the pressure on the "round Jobby" If you do it and have any problems, PM me and I'll call you on the phone, where it's easier to explain. Got some scoop on Carter Carbs the company, etc. Carter sold the rights for Edelbrock to use the Carter Carb to make their carbs but they tweeked them a little here and there to their liking(Back in the early eighties) . Carter carbs a now made and owned by Federal Mongual(SP)....

Tom Hand: While not a big spreadbore like the Q-Jet, the AVS has 1-7/16" primaries and 1-11/16" secondaries. So I figured it was kind of a spreadbore, or at least not a squarebore like the AFB or the 4160. Last edited by '68OrangeSunshine; 10-16-2003 at 04:44 AM. |

Summit has the tune up kit for i think $35.00 it will come with a varied arrangement of rods and jets. You may check someplace locally also, Like NAPA,Checker,Auto Zone etc. If they sell the Carb. They should have the tune up kit.
