Which heads? 202 or Vortec?
I just picked me up a 4bolt main 350 that I'm going to bore and stroke to a 383.....
Now the question, which heads? I love the vortec heads, and if I go with those it will the be E-Tec Edelbrock heads and intake but I know 202 heads flow alot of air. Suggestions and opinions are welcome. Also on the casting numbers of the block what combo of numers will tell me the year of the block? |

Can't beat Vortec heads for the money. Not much in the way of upgrades for them though.

Re: Which heads? 202 or Vortec?
I would go with the Vortecs of the two.The 202's flow but don't have the combustion chambers that the Vortecs will. The vortecs also flow well at street RPM's.For about $1,000.00 you could go aftermarket.Even if that's not in the budget right now it might be wise to design to use tham as an upgrade.

Re: Which heads? 202 or Vortec?
Patriot sells an iron Vortec head with a 185cc runner that is a good head and still reasonable ($600/pr complete). Edelbrock e tecs are a good head but spendy! Summit sells an aluminum head for about $900 that is a good head (Dart makes them with Summits name on them). Vortecs are a great head and can be improved with a bit of bowl blending and a bigger valve is they are backcut, but the bowl blend is money and doesn't cost a lot. I built a killer set of GM iron Vortecs for about $400 and they'll outflow anything within a mile and costing up to $1000/set, so OE iron heads are a great option, just don't spend $2-300 on a set to have them rebuilt as then you'll be into the Patriot/Summit head cost range.

You sure that's for two, it almost looks like it's for just one but it does say that the shipped weight of the item is 110 pounds so it probably is two but still, i'd look into before ordering.

Re: Which heads? 202 or Vortec?
I used world sportsman II heads they made a ton of power for me. sometimes aluminum heads make less power than cast iron. how much power do you want to make?

Re: Which heads? 202 or Vortec?
i have 202-160s with 64 chambers.
i wouldn't switch. especially because i'd need a new intake manifold, and i'm happy with my performer. that being said, everyone pretty much agrees that as far as performace... it's 6 one, and half dozen the other. BUT fuelie (camel hump, double hump, etc...) are more period correct.

Re: Which heads? 202 or Vortec?
I only had a block so I had to buy heads and intake so going with Vortec was an easy chose since my engine builder had them ready to install for $500. The intake and new valve covers were a toss up in price. Be sure to write down your intake gasket number because you have to buy a special one. Mine is Fel-Pro 1255. Spark plugs for a 96 Chevy truck works.
