help with my key

I am trying to put a new tumbler and ing switch in but my problem is that the key will not go into the lock or acc position. so I can not get the tumbler out to replace it. any suggestions.

squirt a little wd-40 on the key and put it in and turn a few times,do that a couple of times . it should loosenup a little. good luck

if you can't get the key to turn at all to be able to replace the cylinder you might be better off to get the switch assembly and just replace it all.(btw,that's what i had to do!)couldn't get the pin to release the lock cylinder.and it's not expensive to replace.all you'll need to retain is the pot-metal spacer between the switch and backside of the metal dash.

i have tried that already I got the new parts but i can not get it apart the retainer wont come off without the tumblet comming out still

the way i have done it with out beatin on the dash is,
if you take a drill bit a little bit smaller than the hole for the tumbler then you candrill the tumbler out and then turn the benzel off.

The '68s don't have an ACC position like the 69-72s have. I'm not sure how to get it out. I think you stick the paper clip in the hole while it's in the off position, then turn it to the left and out it pops.

If that doesn't work, PM me and I'll look in my '67 chassis service manual to see if it's the same, and if it tells me how to get it out. I don't have a '68 service manual, or I'd look in there.

ckhd is correct.mine on the 68 did not have a acc. position. my new one does.if you need to buy the bezel cause you cant remove the old,you might as well do it.none of these parts are expensive,and brand new parts are a hellava lot easier to put on .

i had to go back and re-read your earlier reply,to notice that you had said that you couldn't get the bezel to separate from the switch assembly.sorry,dude!reach up under the dash and grab the switch assembly,pull the plug of wires entering the switch.now you can turn the switch assembly in a counter clock-wise turn as you hold the bezel w/ a pair of side jaw pliers.this was the ONLY way mine would come apart.after forcing the bezel to back off of the switch,it obviously booger's up the thread on both the bezel and the switch assembly.it will seem that the cylinder assembly will not come through the hole of your bezel,but if you keep at it it will! once you get the whole assembly apart from the dash it's very easy,hardest part is convincing it to come apart!if yours is any like mine the only part re-usable will be the spacer just behind the dash.i had to get the new bezel,switch,and lock cylinder assembly.remember also when you go to put back together:plug in switch,put spacer on it's tab's,put it up to back-side of hole and put the screw the bezel on.last thing you do is put the lock cylinder in,or you'll scratch you're new bezel.ordered mine from brother's,and they offer a bezel nut tool that will not scratch it and ease the job of installing.hope this helps,good luck!

thanks I will do that how much was the bezal? sorry for the spelling i am not to good at it. I just did not want to mess up my dash with force

not a bad price.i had to go back,through my e-bay purchases to see how much i had paid for mine and i had paid the same price +$3 for the shipping.switch goes for 'round 15-20 bucks and the cyl.lock for'round 10-12 bucks.
