Comfort grip horn button help needed

I bought an aftermarket comfort grip wheel and I cannot get the horn button on correctly. When I put it on so it is centered, it is up against the wheel and the horn honks constantly. I can put it on slightly off-center and the horn works as it should, except it does not sit flat, one side is farther away from the wheel than the other. Has anyone else had this issue? No instructions with wheel. I can post pics tonight after work to show what I am talking about.

Re: Comfort grip horn button help needed

I just put one in my 74 a few weeks ago. Mine didn't come with instructions either, and not having installed one before there were a few minutes of headscratching involved.

First, install longer horn contact and spring included in little baggie of parts. Then install the main adapter, making sure the little contact passes through the hole in the adapter. Torque the main nut down.

Then install steering wheel onto adapter. Make sure the wheel is seated properly in the notches in the adapter. Tighten the steering wheel to adapter screws.

Finally, install the horn button mechanism. I believe there was a wide notch in the mechanism that goes towards the top. There are three little notches cut out of the steering wheel for the three screws to go down through and thread into adapter. Tighten those screws carefully. They are easy to break with even a modest snug with the screwdriver.

Last, pop horn button onto horn mechanism, making sure the tab at the top lines up with the notch in the horn mechanism.

Re: Comfort grip horn button help needed

Shady, thank you for the info. I see the white stripe on the horn button goes at the top. The horn works when I push on the black plastic piece, so I think my hub is on correctly. i just can't seem to get the horn cap to fit correctly.

Thanks,
Mark

Re: Comfort grip horn button help needed

I seem to remember that I wiped a small smear of silicone lube inside of mine to pop it into place without undue force.
