Lower Radiator Hose on a Small Block Question?
My lower radiator hose rides on the frame where is curves up a little. This has left a groove in my past two hoses. Is the correct set up?

you must have the wrong radiator. does the botom "spickit" curve upward? if not you have the wrong radiator and that is the problem. i've been driving a 71 for the past 6yrs and have to replace mine once every year for the same reason. i have a 78-87 G body 3 core rad in mine and it has a straight "spickit" hose rubs on the upward curve on the frame. the correct radiator for a 67-72 GM truck has a lower "spicket" that curves upward to clear the frame. you need the right radiator for your truck.

Mine has a piece of old tyre inner tube wrapped around it where it rubs and it seems to stop any problems. Not hugely pretty but unless you've got a show truck....

Get yourself a piece of fuel hose a couple of inches long. Split it lengthways and slip it onto the edge of the frame where it rubs. That's what I always do.

Lippyp and Tx Firefighter have it down. I use a piece of discarded heater hose about 4 inches long, split length wise. The heater hose is held on the frame by the radiator hose. The "hose on hose" contact doesn't ruin the radiator hose.

Was this a poor design from the factory?
I wish I had save that lower radiator hose I replaced Then I would have the piece I need...lol. I guess I will have to spend $7 for a new one to make the piece.

If you do have a radiator that has a bottom straight "spickit" just use a 73 up chevy truck hose....works perfect

Mine rubs, and I did the scrap hose section deal too.
When i had the rad guys at work fixin me up a rad for the one ton, I had them move the water outlet up an inch. Don't know if it'll help or not, but it is a vain attempt at re-enginearing GM's mistake. |
