Does a 2wd wood bed fit on a 4 X 4 steel bed frame???
I have placed a small deposit to purchase a decent used complete wood bed for $300. It is from a 2 wheel drive longbed. It seems to be missing a cross sill or two just between the wheel housings, but otherwise is in good shape. There is a 2' span between cross sills in this area, but all the other cross sill spans are more like 1 foot or so. It would not be good if the missing cross sill means it was a converted steel bed or something, and also the wood is rotted and will need to be replaced. I very much wish I had a camera with me, but I didn't.
The big question is that I'm planning on installing it on my 4 X 4 longbed. My current bed is 100% shot to H---. Will this be a simple bolt on experience, or will I have to change many other parts. I am hoping it's just a simple 8 bolts off, 8 bolts back on swap. oh, both are off 1971 chevy's. Has anyone done this and is this a good deal for a relatively (much better than what I've got) straight bed? Thanks in advance for any tips or suggestions. |

The wood beds and the steel floor beds are the same.

well, not sure if they are the same but I have a wood SWB on my 4x4. The area between the wheel wells has a support on the frame. Check my signature for pics. My piece was added by the PO but I think that most have a stock piece there. You could always add your own piece if needed. check lmctruck.com for some pics or Mar-K since they are a vendor here...

Any pics of any completed wood beds out there so I can see what the finished product should look like? And Oak or Pine? Who likes which better? |

There are tons of posts on wood floors, I have NOS wood going back into mine. Mar-K is supposed to be one of the best bed vendors out there. They have a website but I don't have it handy...

NOS wood?
is it any good? I'd think wood sitting on a shelf in a warehouse for 35 or so years would be junk. |

not sure when it was purchased, it was in the PO's basement and seems to be in great shape. Still had some dealer stickers on it and is black. Came with the truck so I might as well use it. I plan on finishing it again to be sure that its sealed....

from what I can tell the supports that are under the bed are different heights. this would only come in to play if you wanted to make a metal floor into a wood floor. please correct me if I am wrong
